NEH's budget is tiny—not just compared to NSF/NIH, but compared to humanities funding in every other wealthy nation. What little was there was largely rescinded and several programs were cut in full last year. It decimated not merely individual projects but whole corners of the humanities in the US.

I always tell students that university is a rare opportunity to study things that are interesting rather than useful.
Those I'm closest to who are still in academia aren't... having the best time (understatement) with the current political situation. I am grateful my job is less directly in the line of fire. Maybe now is a time when everyone is mourning what we hoped that career could be
When I finished undergrad, I thought I'd go into academic libraries. I miss research and teaching so, so much. And I could handle the lower pay; I wouldn't love it, but I could. But I don't think I can handle moving at the whims of the job market
Just woke up from a dream in which I was teaching again, two classes of undergrads. I miss it so much 😭 I was never someone who thought I'd seek a TT job, but now that I'm out of academia entirely I have moments of grief--this is the most intense it's been! I feel I've let my past self down.

Last thing for now, I will say I think the Wyoming coins is the most poorly-designed. Not because I don't like the image, but because it doesn't wear well! I think the lack of fine detail makes it easier for it to rub away, counterintuitively. Fewer crevices for contrast-creating dirt?
I think next I'll do a subjective rating of how much I personally like the design of the coin and see if there's any correlation there. I am not the one who saved most of them, but still!
The fact that Delaware-minted coins mostly go west and Philadelphia-minted coins mostly stay east really shows here, too! This collection was made mainly in WA state, so of course D coins are much more common. Interesting that despite OH being more commonly D, it's still under in the collection

Shown a slightly different way, here is how over (or under) represented each state is, based on those percentages. I was *shocked* when I learned that Connecticut, Georgia, and New Hampshire aren't the top three minted, I feel like I see SO many of them! (the top 3 minted are VA, CT, and NY)
