#WorldBookDay - apparently - well - here is my contribution, so far. Two more out this year ... and another one on which I am working when not getting distracted by unrelated ideas that then end up on substack ... I will point you to the comments for the link to my most recent piece
Lovely write up of the memorial for the wonderful Romain Roch, who died in January, aged 22..poet, anarchist, lover of the wild and one of the kindest people I have ever met.
In these shattered times, love and kindest are radical and necessary.
‘Grow your heart to the size of the world.’
It is a risky business, falling in love - with people, with animals, with the world - but we have to take the chance - we cannot afford to give up.
Some words (link in comments) on the loss of a bright light ..
A Close Shave - wildlife hospitals do so much amazing work ... this #hedgehog lost the top of a patch of spines ...a VERY lucky hedgehog! Does Bluesky squelch substack links? Just in case putting the story in the comments ... actually - if anyone knows, please tell me!

Turns out that Oxford is a hot spot for beauty in/of the beasts 🤣 The only reasonable thing is to read them both!
Thrilled that @jowimpenny.bsky.social has a new book - so much good in Beauty of the Beasts ... even if the title reminds me of something!!! hughwarwick.substack.com/p/beauty-of-...

So great to see my photos out there in the wild!!
I know that many of you will have been wondering what to get me for Christmas!!!! Well - it is easy, free ... and hopefully something that will bring you interest and entertainment ... sign up to my Substack! hughwarwick.substack.com
Bat book got delayed - something to do with the printing - think it is due out in the spring. @graffegbooks.bsky.social ?
If you pop back a few issues you will see the theme of gratitude to teachers and mentors recurring - it is something I see as really important - and hope to become someone that others will write about in gratitude! hughwarwick.substack.com/p/sofa-so-go...
quite a lot of things have popped up - an article I had forgotten writing for my old school magazine, the first view of the cover of my new book, and a reminder that I will be talking about hedgehogs and hibernation on BBC Radio 4 tomorrow at midday ... oh - and a link to latest update in comments
That is not a photo of a hedgehog in daylight.
#Hedgehog time - grab a calendar, question the life choices of a vandal, dry your boots and hair, skate with prickles, and help count hedgehogs ... trust me, it makes sense ... have a read! open.substack.com/pub/hughwarw...
just written about the day ... and what a day! Thank you to everyone - from @helenczerski.bsky.social and @tomheap.bsky.social in Bristol, to the wonderfully supportive team at @zslofficial.bsky.social who made it all happen! hughwarwick.substack.com/p/hedgehogs-...
A magnificent shout out to @oxfordnuj.bsky.social member @hedgehoghugh.bsky.social , currently heading to London to receive the Clarivate Award for Communicating Zoology, from the Zoological Society of London, for his book ‘Cull of the Wild’

1. Some good news at last. This week’s column is about the amazing thing a couple of us stumbled into three years ago, which we’ve now developed into a global research programme. It doesn’t change everything, of course, but it could help change quite a lot. + 🧵 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I had a listen to this ... thank you Stephen for a really interesting conversation ... I went places I was not expecting!!
100% agree with @hedgehoghugh.bsky.social. Low level of literacy and low level of willingness to learn or listen. The notion that nature can jog on somewhere else, or thrive in just-planted woods is either stupidity or wilful fantasy and lies.

If you have a few spare minutes, this is a wonderfully inspiring short film about two very impressive young conservationists making a difference for harvest mice. A great reminder of the passion and hope young people can inject into things!

thank you x
I have written a couple of new pieces on Substack - first about the impact of bonfires/fireworks on wildlife (and my dog!) and then the amazing work of two young nature-nerds who have managed to do great things for harvest mice (and got @chrisgpackham.bsky.social nibbled!) hughwarwick.substack.com
