The sense of urgency is difficult to communicate.
I think people have trouble sometimes putting it into words. And also in some (of course not all) cases the threat isn’t as visceral. It’s so hard to describe accurately what it’s like to teach to the tests.
I really have doubts.
Been thinking about this exact thing—possible that people who should care can’t imagine anyone not immediately understanding their view. Better than the alternative possibility, which is that they don’t think it matters since only some people should be expected to care about books/ideas.
if you think it’s self-evident why teaching kids to read is good beyond “test scores” or “economic security” i assure you it is not

Progressives and Democrats have become incurious about, and in some cases openly hostile to, public education issues. I do not understand it. It's bizarre. Universal free public education is one of the greatest achievements of this country, and a fundamentally progressive win.
