and it’s all in service of course of turning Dunk into a fucking superhero at the end - but a grounded one who’s been getting absolutely whaled on. the makeup team needs an Emmy nom for making him look like undead Gregor by the end. I read it as even scaring Egg for a moment which is great.
the sheer punishment Dunk takes is a little over the top but it’s all very credible - Aerion (a broadly good fighter, which is an interesting adaptation) is continually doing showy and violent-LOOKING things that aren’t actually maximally effective against Dunk’s armor (besides the lance ofc.)
the actual portrayal of combat was spectacular. the impact of everything, relative simplicity but just a couple combat stunts to make these guys look like badasses. confusion handled entirely through the camera following Dunk - everything else happening is very clear when you actually see it!
KOT7’s biggest challenge was I think the scope and pursuant stakes - comparing “these 14 guys, some of whom you know” to GoT episodes that tied in multiple-season arcs. Hard to compare with Watchers On the Wall or Blackwater for that, but again, using Dunk’s POV helps a lot.
