a few days ago, i made a stupid, careless joke. i wasn’t aware of who i was quote-tweeting, which is on me. this hurt a lot of people, and i am extremely sorry and will be more careful, both with my words and who i engage with online, going forward

Maybe it’s worth highlighting that this is/has been project of ending legal immigration because legal immigration since 1965 has been less white. It’s never been about “enforcement of laws” although restrictionists found that focus on undocu ppl helped legitimize their ethnic cleansing project.
if you think about it i’m kind of exactly like wren provenance, girl anthropologist
I am sure I will regret weighing in here but this piece also uses the profile structure to get at what some of what really matters: how movements stay together and fracture, what goes into organizing, online v offline, how activism sometimes calls for annoying earnestness, etc.
Incredible opinion. It holds that the common ICE tactic of jumping out of an unidentified rental vehicle and seizing suspected noncitizens while masked violates the Fourth Amendment because the *manner* of the seizure is incompatible with a free society governed by the rule of law.
thank you kelsey!!
thank you :)
Please do not let Will’s tantrum over getting the attention he wanted distract you from the amazing Minneapolis coverage Gaby has been producing all month (all while also writing a book because she’s just that good)
for that series, i reported on CBP’s. ash surveillance apparatus in the sonoran desert, and its “prevention through deterrence” strategy, which funnels migrants onto dangerous routes—and which predates DHS by more than a decade:

most of all, i’m proud to work somewhere that knows the problems with ICE don’t begin and end with trump. in 2022 we published a series on DHS’s origins and history, looking at every component agency from CBP to TSA to FEMA

i’m very proud of @theverge.com’s ongoing minneapolis coverage. i’m insanely lucky to work somewhere that takes immigration reporting seriously and did so even before trump’s reelection. we took many different approaches to DHS’s operation in MN, maybe they’re not all to your taste. that’s okay!
