I don't think anyone without a vested interest in getting Starmer or Labour out of office has a grievance with how he has handled it in the first week. It would be a really bad idea to change course without the circumstances materially changing.

Keir Starmer put in a real bind.

On the one hand, he could join in with a war which is almost certainly illegal and ill-fated, kowtowing to Trump (one of the most unpopular people in the world, especially among people who might vote Labour next GE), and giving Farage and Badenoch a huge win...

Who actually were the Hero Voters? Labour won in 2024 because of economically insecure voters, not social conservatism.

Have been a bit frustrated by some of the conversation about Labour's voter coalition.

I've written about who the "Hero Voters" actually were, how we won them, and what we need to do to earn their support next time.

I actually re-watched the series and film (Serenity) in the last few months. Some things about it are still great to this day, and I got plenty nostalgic, but it also carries around a fair amount of misogynistic baggage (I wonder why) and it would be hard to imagine a reboot working...

Subtract 30, divide by 2 is a decent approximation to converting from degrees Farenheit to degrees Celsius across ambient temperatures.

Ah right, an impairment is when you thought your building was worth Β£8mn and it gets valued instead at Β£6mn. That isn't a problem unless you were planning to sell it, or you need to spend Β£2mn to get it to a usable condition!

So towards the top of RG for % spent on staff costs. Unsurprising they are targeting staff cuts, but it's a strategy that works much less than senior management like to imagine.

Thanks for the charts!

I have not, but my maths suggests the note has frequency of 58.3 Hz or some power of 2 multiple of that. It should look like it is vibrating extremely slowly?

If you bend by a quarter-tone you would almost identically sync with the camera frame rate!

I get that, but I actually think it's good to have a clear distinction between the operators for variable assignment, function parameter setting, and equality testing.

But if it's in your own code, you're not hurting anyone!

Given that #Rstats as a language belongs in the bottom right (I say with affection), I'll allow it!

No, I think using '=' for assignment in #Rstats goes on the bottom row... πŸ˜‰

Thousands of scientists inflate their CVs with self-published studies that cost millions of dollars of public money An analysis of 100,000 special issues of academic journals reveals that one in eight is filled with articles written by the editor, particularly at the publisher MDPI

So interesting! Suggests there is willingness to pay a price premium for free range which is unaffected by the regulation change (people don't think the change was enough, or don't know about it) or income effect.

Not sure you would put it down to supernormal profits being allowed in the short run.

Some of these analyses are currently difficult to conduct and involve computationally expensive naive Monte Carlo.

We will investigate alternatives which can leverage probabilistic programming techniques (as seen in PyTorch, Jax, Pyro, Stan) for lightning fast approximations, and more!

Deporting legally settled people is β€˜broadly in line’ with Tory policy, says Badenoch’s office Conservative leader’s spokesperson sets out plan to strip the right of indefinite leave to remain from people claiming benefits

This is just ridiculous as a policy. We would think it was atrocious if someone we cared for was kicked out of another country they'd made home, especially after securing a settled legal status.

The Conservatives are not serious, they are flailing.
