The looters took everything of monetary and sentimental value, but left a handful of items, including my contact lenses and a few remaining flyers for my book. Iβm pretty sure they took a flyer to check out the book later.
I feel lucky to afford these things. No one was physically hurt. But the care for family, expressed through these gifts, is diminished, and only sharp observation and a dark sense of humor feels appropriate for this Grinch-like incident.
Among the gifts lost: hand-carved stamps with the Korean names of my nieces, chocolates from Bi-Rite, deerskin gloves for my mom from Iceland, wine from Napa. The death of my father has been a lot, so on a level, Iβm able to shrug this off as just stuff.
Over the last year, my partner and I carefully found and collected gifts to give to my family on xmas. This morning, my luggage with all those gifts was stolen from inside my apartment, and then the bag was dumped a few blocks away.

breaking news update, found at the Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa:
For me, AmeriCorps was an opportunity to explore California, leading to hilariously scrappy living situations and a longtime commitment to nonprofit work. Itβs a tragedy that AmeriCorps wonβt exist to inspire future generations.
Nothing about AmeriCorps screams βexcess federal spendingβ to me - I worked full-time serving immigrant families and children for a ~$1,000 monthly stipend, a food stamp application, and a modest grant that I eventually used for law school.
My first job was as an AmeriCorps member, teaching arts and public speaking - and this month, the βDepartment of Government Efficiencyβ is dismantling AmeriCorps, which drew people of diverse backgrounds to serve in educational programs, build housing, and respond to natural disastersβ¦
Iβll be at the Cartoon-A-Thon this Saturday at @schulzmuseum.bsky.social
