Michael Dirda's guide to books for the holidays. You probably won't find them on any other list.

Along with Tartarus, numerous other small and independent publishers also focus on the fantastic. Some favorites of mine are Hippocampus Press (Lovecraft and his circle), Valancourt Books (Gothic classics and literature in translation), Centipede Press (collector's editions), Dedalus Books (works of distorted reality), Ramble House (try "His Beautiful Hands: The Short Fiction of Oscar Cook," edited by Johnny Mains), Wakefield Books (strange European literature), Chiroptera Press (Thomas Ligotti, T.E.D. Klein and others), Hellebore Books (a recent highlight: "Tales of Occult Britain and Northern Ireland," edited by Maria J.
Perez Cuervo) and Swan River Press. This last, as it happens, has just issued "A Mind Turned in Upon Itself," which reprints essays and a 150-page critical biography of Le Fanu by the aforementioned Jim Rockhill.

Another incredible shoutout! Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Michael Dirda includes TALES OF OCCULT BRITAIN in his Christmas roundup @washingtonpost.com.

An ancient woodland home to witches and healers and an anxious cadet grieving his lover.

A fairy hill and a widower haunted by his late wife.

A lost land swallowed by the sea, a colony of rare flowers, and an academic experiencing visions.

A hill carved with mysterious figures and an eccentric old man who follows the old ways.

An island steeped in legend and a stranger who claims to be its next king.

An old mine under a rocky outcrop, a ghostly cavalcade, and a lost child.

A Victorian graveyard and a young man led to it by an antique walking-stick.

An ancient cairn said to be the dwelling of a witch and a tight-knit family on their annual mountain climb.

Thanks B. Everything I read around the topic says publishers don't support authors with marketing, & sales are down (it's almost as if there's a direct correlation between the two). Trad publishing doesn't seem worth the effort it takes to get an agent then a publisher given the lack of support.

Is it too early to implement a Wicker Man style economic development policy, or should we leave it another week or two?
