Thought for the day...
Instead of starry-eyed love for inequality-generating, far-right-enabling US tech firms, who wealth-extract in the long run, Europe should go harder on them to protect jobs, social cohesion, & firms on high streets - it could be a way to assert independence in the Trump era

The UKβs high streets have reached a tipping point β and Reform will reap the benefits | John Harris
When even Poundland and charity shops are closing, weβre near a point of no return. But there is hope, says Guardian columnist John Harris
This article is bang on. Our struggling high streets, like potholes, a visible sign of decay
The colossal wealth transfer to online giants benefits US tech billionaires and the far right not ordinary people
No.10 may welcome a recent 'Β£40bn investment from Amazon' - the net damage far higher.

People who encourage non-compliance with law enforcement orders are putting lives at risk.
If I were an armed officer and a person ignored my lawful orders and began driving in my general direction I wouldn't hesitate to shoot them. Sitting in your living room, you can claim

Starting the New Year on a positive note, 2026 will see 8 million+ workers receive an improvement to their sick pay. One of many improvements in Labour's employment rights bill.
More to do on, as SSP remains too low, but proud to have worked on this with the Safe Sick Pay campaign

Whilst the NHS is facing a massive winter flu crisis - and flu rips through workforces, some members of the House of Lords are voting to hold up #sickpay rights that most other developed economies take for granted.
Have we forgotten the pandemic? Get on with it.

Interesting piece. But it's not just about channels, it's about a larger crisis in government comms - and in society - which is not a new thing and goes back perhaps 15 years. Put simply, the Whitehall comms machine has lost the ability to win arguments.

Her website landing page: Baroness Michelle Mone of Mayfair OBE
If Michelle Mone has "no wish" to return to the Lords as a Tory peer, as reported this weekend, she should probably stop boasting about being a baroness

To remove indefinite leave to remain from people who already have it they'd have to dismantle our entire system of rights legislation and probably end judicial independence.
But they could do that with a majority. They've said they'd do that.

Probably not popular to say it... but this FT piece explains how excessive spending on pensioners is why we are in a fiscal hole. The reality is things like triple lock are unsustainable and causing huge wealth inequalities [link below]

Stewart Lee - Damned Immigrants
YouTube video by Jimmy Lee
Stewart Lee's sketch 8 years ago remains the best response any public figure has given on the migration debate www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cge...
True public service broadcasting would be for the BBC just to play a bit of it for 'balance' every time they interview a reform politician about immigration

The racist riots would not have been possible at that speed and scale without the personal contribution of Elon Musk. Both his acts and omissions made a real difference. He amplified both lawful misinformation and unlawful hatred. Yet so little haa been done in 11 months to Make Twitter Lawful Again

Spot on - if the Govt is serious about tackling rise of misinformation and racism (and with it some of the interest from voters in reform) it should be acting on this.
Staying silent / doing nothing is a dereliction of democratic duty.

Agree though I'd be more keen on seieng them take on platforms like X at a more systemic level, forcing them through legislation or opening doors to fine/block to operations. More of an opening now he's fallen out w Trump? At the very least put an independent investigation on them (as per EC moves)

This new strain of βI went to London. I saw some social problems that were the predictable cause of not spending enough on the safety net and on infrastructure. I decided it was the fault of immigrants. Also, London is finished but also too expensiveβ talk, among other things, is just loser talk.

"direct phone calls from Sir Keir and Chancellor Rachel Reeves that were supposed to placate would-be rebels had instead "been entrenching people" to vote against the bill."
Says it all really - the credibility gap of the PM and Chancellor widens.

An extension of Free School Meals to every child on Universal Credit is on the cards. While the No Child Left Behind Campaign, coordinated by the NEU, is seeking for an extension to all children, it's a huge victory for them and a cause for celebration, It will improve the lives of 500,000 children
