George Lombard Jr. (MLB Pipeline's No. 1 Yankees prospect, No. 32 overall) crushed a leadoff home run against a 97 mph fastball from Garrett Crochet.
Impressive.
I think he hurt himself on this play and is out of the game now.
Todayโs pitchers

96mph sinker from Angel Chivilli today (MLB had this one at 3.3" vert).
Carlos Lagrange up to 102.4mph. Also showed plenty of low-80s sweepers, a few high-80s sliders (that's what he calls it; it looked a little more like a cutter today), and his power-change at 91-93mph. The changeup in particular looks great (he struck out Colt Keith and Jake Rogers with it).
Been thinking about this...
The Yankees are doing something similar with Jake Bird's sinker, which will have more of a true two-seam shape this year as well. Good stuff from @garyhphillips.bsky.social today on Bird, including some info on his altered pitch shapes.

I'm not used to seeing a catcher move his glove as much as Samuel Basallo when receiving. These are back-to-back pitches in the first inning, a strike and a ball (both called correctly, for what it's worth)
It very much confused Albernaz
Hearing Craig Albernaz on the broadcast makes me feel like I'm back home in Wistah again.
Looking forward to this.
Lots of my guys today (people always seem to remember Brad Hand a little more than I expect them to)

Taken from the Yankees' socials, for anyone who was wondering about the actual pronunciation of Carlos Lagrange's name
It feels like heโd be the type of pitcher that adds definition to his breakers somehow, whether itโs switching to a sweeper or firming up a spike for the curve (or both). Slider+curve blending to this extent isnโt that common anymore in MLB.
Usually we've seen Yankees pitchers ADD the one-seam (Fried, Rodรณn, Schmidt, etc.) so this caught my eye.
A quick Camilo Doval note โ the Yankees switched him from a one-seam to a two-seam at the end of August, presumably something they had in mind when they acquired him. More horizontal tail on the sinker after the switch, which ostensibly pairs well with his cutting fastball.
Yankees fans will be absolutely infuriated by Caleb Durbin this season.
Watching some baseball on YT and ended up here. I think about this game from time to time but had forgotten a lot of the specifics.

Iโm alright with what theyโve done this offseason, but this feels silly.
Too committed to the โrunning it backโ bit
Very much enjoyed Zach's look at this phenomenon (and the name he's given it)
That's too bad- I really enjoy listening to you guys.
I believe he was one of the Rays pitchers who threw a fit over Pride Night.
Precisely
I would like to see Pierson Ohl throw more knuckleballs next year.
Could be nothing, could be something. Chivilli's fastball plays down (Coors doesn't help) and has a 10.5% whiff-per-swing rate despite being 97mph. My guess is that the Yankees will teach him a sinker and have him lean even harder into his changeup, which seems to be a pretty good pitch.
I see you what you mean, but he'll make it in.
I guess.
