For a lecture, I am looking for examples of current amateur natural history collectors who focus specifically on the urban realm. For example, a shell, fly, or plant collector who specialises on the biota of one or multiple inner cities (rather than their surroundings). Any suggestions?

New study models wildfire impacts on aquatic ecosystems in Pacific Northwest streams, showing varied effects on fish and food webs based on fire severity, water temperature, and riparian changes.

Ahh the only way he could be persuaded is if there is greater need by the public here than there is on X

The results of a new paper show that citizen science plays a vital role in the early detection of invasive alien species and that data obtained through citizen science is crucial for early warnings.

My vote is for bittern/heron:
- legs very telling with bent knee
- fierce face (more subjective)
- Typical position on large pond leaf just above the water
- plumpness & short tail could be kingfisher but also very in character & heronesque
Bronze sculpture of japanese or south east asian origin.
Contextually actually I’m more confident this is a bittern/heron. Many of the pictures when you type into google show them on the familiar large leaf covering ponds and water bodies. The night herons also tend to have crests. Can’t be specific on species though!
Tricky, plumpness of body and positioning on branch suggests kingfisher family, especially the tail but the legs and fierce face say bittern/heron type. Look how those legs bend back at the knee joint. Small crest on top unsure. Legs alone I would say bittern/heron, I’ll share for interest. Gorgeous
20 golden plover spotted on a farm in Winchester a couple of days ago. But I couldn’t be 100% sure of the species… it’s only when I looked at the acoustic recordings that my confidence shot up.
Acoustic surveying is not just for bats - think #soils #water #birds and #forests
I gained a new line manager recently & we’re both keen birders. So, to cement our new relationship I now bring her feathers, mostly collected after @_BTO North Wilts ringing sessions.
I wouldn’t say it’s bribery… 🤔 but if my career reaches new heights I might know the reason.

💚 A good BASKING BANK 🐍
Small scale study indicates banks can enhance local reptile diversity. Wider area land use around them also increases.

Nice… but not stunning.
As pretty as this piece of ecodesign is, cocreators ArtEcology know it’s currently just dead. Whiteness is the greatest lie the classical era ever taught us.
Only when plants grow, water pools & insects shelter will this truly be alive & beautiful.

I love being able to read posts from anyone in any language. Usually I just click the ‘translate’ button and it instantly converts to english. Unfortunately here it directs me away to Google rather than an in-built translation. Slight but annoying delay.
Is this likely to change @bsky.app ?
I’ve stretched my wings and flown over the sea to land in a field with a tree. There’s a blue sky behind so I’ll sing to find others a little like me.
But I’ve landed in trees like this before and fields that seem familiar. So let’s not get too excited here, after all — it’s just social media.
