I appreciated your rant on rural internet so much. I work at a small rural ISP, and it's frustrating. Many communities have high capacity fiber run through them, but the telcos refuse to invest in the last few km to hookup people and refuse to have smaller providers hook into it affordably.

Big Box of Modems - The US Robotics NETServer 16 from 1996
YouTube video by Ben Jeffery
I managed to finish this video before my holiday ended, this time looking at a US Robotics 16 modem remote access server. I also found a pretty decent cheap PBX that works way better than an ATA for testing modems.

Network Telephone Interconnect Coverage Map for Northern Ontario
I have a brochure showing coverage for the phone patch system run by the two-way radio / ISP that I work for, with the access numbers on the other side. You just need a VHF radio with a DTMF pad, then there's Zetron gear at the tower. Many sites still in use today because of bad cell coverage here.

This odd little machine ended up living! Recapping the motherboard went way better with a beefier tip on my soldering iron.

Recapping this Biostar iDEQ 330G didn't go well with the tools I have, the motherboard loves soaking up heat. I always end up frustrated when I have to desolder something, so I ordered a desoldering iron and some larger tips for my normal iron. Crossing my fingers that this goofy PC will work.

I'm amazed at how well this video is doing. I thought it was going to be a bit too niche but apparently many people had the same reaction as I did.

Does a $5 Fiber Optic to Cable TV Adapter Actually Work?
YouTube video by Ben Jeffery
I saw some of these completely passive fiber to coax / CATV adapters on aliexpress and thought they might as well be HDMI to garden hose adapters. I work with fiber and wireless, but this was something I didn't think was possible without active equipment

I vaguely remember AssaultCube would let you edit the map in real time during a multiplayer game.

WiMAX and Motorola PMP320: The Next Big Thing that... Wasn't.
YouTube video by Ben Jeffery
I finished another video! This time, I look at a wireless protocol from the early 2000s that had a lot of hype: WiMAX. I even setup a little WiMAX tower in my basement using some equipment from Motorola.

Plaintree Wavebridge: 100 Mbps wireless over a kilometer away, using infrared light
YouTube video by Ben Jeffery
Here's a video I made about a nifty free space optics network bridge from the early 2000s, which lets you blast 100 Mbps up to a kilometer away with infrared. Not a single microcontroller in there that I could find, but it still has some interesting features.
