Dark stormy thoughts on writing villains
Itβs easy (for me) to make antagonists with less emotional depth than the protagonist. But itβs a lot less interesting for the reader. An antagonistsβ depth and complexity are often what drives them to extreme behavior.
Yes, I'm amazed when the writing is a knife fight some mornings, but when I look the next day, I don't see any quality differences between those difficult days and the easy ones. Ie, when the writing's hard, the result is often just as good as when it's easy (for me).
English doesnβt have rules so much as habits it refuses to explain.
