Wellington council budget cuts - big climate cuts
Deputy mayor Ben McNulty has been behind closed doors taking a scalpel to council spending and today, some time around noon, invites Wellington to see his masterpiece.
We’re in a climate crisis, a 40 percent cut to our climate response budget makes no sense financially or for the future of the city. Next week’s proposals include a total gutting of cycleway funding, & a backdown on commercial rates for Air B&B providers www.thepost.co.nz/nz-news/3609...

Screen shot from report that says
Key insights from this report include:
Shifting Perceptions: A slim majority (52%, 29-country average) believe gender equality efforts have adequately progressed within their countries, showing an uptick since 2019.
Diverse Views on Contribution: Notably, 54% of men feel they are already contributing too much towards equality - a perspective shared by rather fewer women (36%)
Concerns on Reverse Discrimination: 52% of men feel efforts towards women's equality means we are now discriminating against men.
Right...that old reverse discrimination

At the elections in May I'll be rooting for the Scottish Greens to have their best election result yet but I won't be able to stop myself shedding a tear if I see Reform take up seats in the Scottish Parliament.

From a global Greens perspective, fantastic. From my British citizenship perspective, I just feel so utterly heartbroken that Reform is leading the polls and even though it has been trending this way for a while it's devastating to have to look at.

Fully need this hopium. As part of the generation that saw it was possible to close the ozone layer hole then saw big industry make it impossible to take the next round of climate action we needed, it's still worth keeping up the fight.

Debt collectors to pursue Pacific students over govt scholarships
Officials say tighter enforcement of Pacific scholarship rules is needed to protect NZ's reputation – but the opposition says we should focus on improving economic opportunities
I worry about our young people being saddled with debt like this and wonder if there is a design flaw with the programme that needs to be addressed. If people are bonded to return surely it is important to ensure that the economic conditions are there to enable people to meet their obligations.

NZ First and ACT racing to the bottom as they cannibalise anti-Māori votes. Now's the time to be having conversations with friends and family about why tino rangatiratanga can benefit us all and is nothing to be scared of.

Average households got a 17.3% reduction in interest payments in 2025
Stats NZ says falling interest rates helped push household living costs down below the official rate of inflation as measured by the Consumers Price Index in the past year
Headline vs who benefits in this supposed trickle down economy
"the highest-spending households recorded the lowest inflation rate at 0.8% [...] Rent increased 1.9% over the year and was the main contributor to rising living costs for beneficiary households."

City Mission continues to do amazing work and not surprising it's using Ora Toa dentists (presumably from Ngāti Toa iwi's medical service). Free dental should be available to everyone with dental needs and community based providers like City Mission should be fully supported to help communities

The market won’t save us from climate disaster
OPINION: With buyouts off the table and homeowners told to shoulder the risk, is this transition being done in the cruellest possible way?
"Ordinary people, not polluters, are being asked to pick up the tab, while major carbon emitters continue to escape the costs of the damage they contribute to."
Would have been useful for the media to emphasise this in 2023. Public good before corporate greed.

NZ has fallen into a 'crisis and response' pattern on climate disaster, experts say. Billions have been spent on storm recovery since 2023, while key climate adaptation funding and planning tools have been cut.

Great news: our work pays for itself. We found that each dollar invested in our project returns up to $2.49 in benefits that everyone can enjoy 🌈 These benefits include less damage to homes and infrastructure, safer native animals and healthier communities with fewer diseases spread by rats.
Conservation work can be seen as a cost: something good but which needs juggling with other priorities. We’re showing that our work isn’t an expense – it’s a solid investment which benefits our whole city.
