So happy to announce our new preprint, β€œA geothermal amoeba sets a new upper temperature limit for eukaryotes.” We cultured a novel amoeba from Lassen Volcanic NP (CA, USA) that divides at 63Β°C (145Β°F) πŸ”₯ - a new record for euk growth!

Please help this small community that was hit by devastating floods. Mostly small rural businesses were affected. Please share!!

I’m voting hematite!
Hematite is cool not just because it’s got a high Curie Point, holding on to magnetic orientation until a high temperature and is therefore very useful for paleomagnetism studies, but also its red streak earned it the cool nickname of β€œbloodstone”!

β€˜Wholesale destruction’: Government shutdown or not, critical science programs are at risk The Trump administration has proposed devastating cuts to federal Earth and climate science programs, and a government shutdown could give them an opportunity to begin implementing those cuts.

Even without a government shutdown, a third of the US Geological Survey’s Climate Adaptation Science Centers could wind down or cease operations this week because the Interior Department is refusing to submit paperwork to release funding.

You're looking at the largest land animal of the Permian (~290 MYA), Eryops megacephalus, which translates to "long-face giant-head".

It's a GIANT AMPHIBIAN. Like somewhere between a SALAMANDER & a FROG, but hog-sized.

And, to get this out of the way, bears a striking resemblance to Barney. πŸŸ£πŸ¦–

I did! I even sketched it. My partner, and I were the only people there. It was a beautiful sunny day on the ocean.

Wondering why rocks are always so amazing. Just finished a trip to Scotland and it seems, once you love geology, you really do find beauty everywhere.

Desert landscapes with bushes of green and browns. A bright red ocotillo flower is in focus and a huge volcanic neck is a bit blurry in the background. This mountain is eroded and has a flat top. The sky is blue but with wispy clouds in the sky as well.

Beautiful mountain in Superior, AZ known as Picketpost. This was a volcano that was a part of the same complex of volcanos that created Superstitions Mtns near PHX. Ocotillo blooming in the desert after a rain with bright red blooms.

We’ll see what happens to the USFS. They’re already talking about not renewing the lease for multiple Forests in Arizona.

Image of an observatory in the right hand corner that is white and has a domed shape. The observatory is surrounded by some very dark, almost blacked out silhouettes of 2 ponderosa pine trees. There is a hatch that is open for the telescope in the dome to do the observing and it is glowing red inside the hatch. The background is a lot of stars that are not typically visible with all the light pollution in Tucson. There are some streaks of green and red in the sky as well.

Observatory on Mt. Lemmon. It’s the largest one that is open to the public in the world! #observatory #mtlemmonskycenter

Wyoming has some breathtaking geology. Highly recommend going to Sinks Canyon State Park, which is surround by National Forest Lands. If interested in the geology, I’ll post an awesome video of the history and losing river system #geology #karst #caves

Superstition Wilderness. This is the remnant of a caldera that was almost 10 miles across during a very volcanic time in Arizona history. Remember wilderness rules and bring plenty of water. Know before you go and #packitin #packitout #leavenotrace #geology #tontonationalforest

Love this! I had a professor say when she was in her post doc a professor refused to accept plate tectonics and would complain constantly in seminars (he was around 90 in the early 2000s).
