BREAKING: Explosions felt across New York City as full socialism begins
“Can’t believe NYC elected a Muslim as mayor.”
In truth—a Black American Christian woman swearing in a Ugandan American Muslim of South Asian ethnicity as his Syrian American wife holds the Qurans he swears in on, all while standing on the steps of a subway station—is the most NYC thing imaginable.
Very much looking forward to discussing the #COP30 #Belém outcomes and potential ways forward tomorrow with @annaperezcatala.bsky.social, @aygoswami.bsky.social, Bernhard Pötter, Max Schulze-Steinen. To register, visit us02web.zoom.us/webinar/regi...

2⃣ In part 2 we open up the discussion to six Global South climate experts, Sunita Narain @ndubash.bsky.social Anumita Roychowdhury @harjeet11.bsky.social Diego Pacheco @rishirbhandary.bsky.social to weigh in

1⃣ In part 1 we ask a list of non-exhaustive questions around the framing: is the cycle of demanding ‘ambitious’ NDCs hinged on emission-cutting targets serving the purpose of climate or low-carbon development, particularly for the Global South?

🖊️New op-ed: The NDC Death Loop
As COP30 approaches, the current cycle of voluntary climate pledges is facing a crisis of relevance; climate governance needs to be reinvented, especially for the Global South

Forecast revisions from IEA Renewables 2025 report.
Optimism and pessimism. The IEA renewables 2025 update is fascinating. It ratchets down both US and China's renewable buildout from the 2024 report. US down more than 40% (!) and China down about 5%.
*Slightly* differently? It’s a clear signal of absolute Western decline, nothing less

"In the first half of 2025 China’s new additions were more than twice the new capacity installed by the entire rest of the world this year. The #2 on the list, India, installed 24GW. The US at #3 installed 21GW. There is an order of magnitude difference."

One benefit I can see is intentionality to actual examine the trade-climate nexus and such a space being designed to specifically do that - because the rigidities of existing spaces are creating loopholes for unwilling actors to block discussions (EU saying UNFCCC isn’t ‘equipped’ to discuss trade)

Would be great to hear about your WTO experience. And yes details are scant on this forum, I’m skeptical especially if it’s driven by Brazil and EU solely, and doesn’t involve groups like South Africa and India who have a lot to say on trade and development
Brazil’s proposal to launch a new climate and trade forum at COP30 is a timely intervention - I outline 5 key dynamics in the climate-trade debate for any new forum to consider.
Above all it must be advanced with the buy-in of developing countries
