I read this, listened to it, then read it again. I very much hope that people are receptive to this message. I have not read a better case for what is needed to win elections again. I know that will take make conversations but this essay is an excellent place to start.
Very well written piece by Thu Nguyen & Jannik Jansen. I cannot agree more. What European leaders call strategic pragmatism is costing the EU its dignity and agency.
If Europe keeps placating its own far right, how can it possibly stand up to Trump?

New paper out!
Together with colleagues from DGB, Franziska Korn and I analyse in it the EU and Germany's new International Partnership policy.
Short thread with main messages below.

These recommendations matter today: The new "Clean Trade and Investment Partnerships" of the EU Commission provide a promising opportunity for reform.
The new German government should use this opportunity & the EU budget negotiations this summer to advance & improve the partnership agenda.
6/6
3. To more convincingly implement the partnership approach requires
a) more funding,
b) greater willingness to integrate industrial policy into trade relations,
c) protecting environmental and human rights in ways that limit costs and economic risks for partners.
5/x
2. Progressive partners welcome the new approach, but care mainly about their own dev strategies & have no tolerance for empty promises.
In this age of geoeconomic competition and EU dependencies in key supply chains, we cannot afford to make lofty promises without following through.
4/x
Our main messages:
1. Partnership instruments remain legally weak, fragmented & underfunded. More powerful trade and investment agreements can contradict the new instruments and themselves lack partnership elements.
3/x
We disentangle the different existing political instruments, collect and report perspectives from key progressive partners across three world regions, and develop recommendations to improve partnership policy especially in the green sector.

Reminder: Le Pen's trial is not a witch hunt, corrupt politicians are regularly condemned to ineligibility for public office in France, from all political parties. There are 103 pages on Wikipedia covering only the most significant ones: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat%C3%....
Because it fears a change of the EU fiscal rules, the Commission is resorting to a very far-reaching interpretation of the rules to make room for much more defense spending. This is a shortsighted mistake because it risks accidentally killing the rules altogether at the worst moment.
Here is why:
Good outcome at the #EuCo on EU fiscal rules: National escape clause is branded as „immediate measure“ but the Commission is asked to explore further options (read: opening the rules). The insight seems to have kicked in that a prolonged use of the escape clause is probably not a good idea.

Rather quick movement in German coalition scoping talks - likely on the question of a new special fund for defence as news from the US becomes more radical by the day:
Reminder that the Census determines how federal dollars, and House seats, are allocated. This is, yet another, five alarm fire.

The Soviet Union also used to falsify statistics
Modelled on the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), it would be free of the baggage of procedures and constraints that hamper existing institutions. All EU countries plus the UK and Norway would be invited to be shareholders. It would lend money for the purchase of military hardware, focusing first on ammunition, and for the financing of the investments required by the defence industry to increase production capacity. It would be financed by the capital subscribed by the member countries (say €100bn) of which only 10 per cent would be called and paid in upfront. It would then be able to borrow the balance in the capital markets with a triple A rating, giving it €100bn lending power without significantly affecting the member countries’ own borrowing capacity. Furthermore, it could be a catalyst for improving military procurement practices, which are currently plagued by parochial attitudes.
