honestly i think the selling point of romance for me (and where it usually fails to land) is 'can i imagine these people sharing an in-joke' like, are they in cahoots. can they laugh together. do they have a similar enough or at least complementary enough outlook that they can connect over something being funny (even if it's funny in a fucked up way! sometimes those are the best in-jokes!) that's not necessarily true love in and of itself, but it does feel like an essential component to me

I think especially with the world the way it is now people are a bit jaded by the "one person saves The Entire World with a magic sword or whatever" and want more achievable goals that they can relate to. Like one town resists the Dark Lord's invasion, or the Mage's Union goes on strike.
There was a great tumblr post about the difference between "tension" and "stakes" (eg. British Bake Off is Low Stakes but High Tension) and how so much cozy offers Low Tension Low Stakes. Which is great for people who want that! But some of us would like a variety of flavors.

I don't make this assumption but hearing that people do does explain why the genre mostly gives me the ick. It's playing up this specific and puritanical idea of what is "wholesome." I've read kink fiction that was extremely wholesome and sweet, but that's not what these readers are looking for.

I think Messenger should have combined Fitz and Keefe into one character because he hasn't actually done anything since like book 3. Having a super-duper psychic connection with Sophie is not substitute for having a personality (or for them having a relationship where they talk to each other)
We needed more Amy. I feel like there were more scenes in an earlier draft that got cut, because they keep referencing conversations with Amy that happen off-page.
I don't even care about any of the ships and I just want Sophie and Fitz to go on a date and do something normal!

And the villain speeches are boring. Way too long, and the protagonists don't have any good rebuttals besides "hey that's kind of fucked up" and they're not even allowed to say fuck. Though I admit I am intrigued to see where the new Evil Lady Alliance goes.
