Thanks for the link, Stephen. After reading countless dunks on Dubai over the last week, this piece resonated a lot with me. Nobody questions that Dubai is an ambivalent place, but at the same time, the city tends to suffer from a weird stereotypization in Western media. Dubai is a shockingly...
The UAE are famously tax-free (with the exception of a meager 5% VAT rate introduced in 2018), so salaries before taxes equal salaries after taxes. At the same time, literally nothing comes for free (schooling, healthcare, etc.), which makes any comparison a highly personalized calculation.
Anyway, "all Bollywood stars" as in the original post is clearly wrong, of course 🙂
A bit lateral, but somebody from the industry told me that quite a few Bollywood stars actually do live in Dubai, as in that's where they spend most of their time. These residences just tend to be framed as "holiday homes", because social convention has it they need to "live" in Bandra or Juhu.

There is a lot of space between overtourism and zero tourism. People who talk about 'overtourism' tend to mention sustainability etc, you can say that's buzzwords, of course...
Disagree on that one. Overtourism is a phenomenon very pronounced in touristic rural areas where economic diversification isn't really possible and housing isn't the most pressing issue either. Needless to say that it can't be fixed by "taller hotels".
Exactly my thought. The entire post is based on the wrong assumption that overtourism is a big city phenomenon. It isn't. Not at all.
I think we all had a time when we thought "Thank God Blatter is gone. Looks like they found a fairly decent guy as replacement."
The median age in #Italy has increased by *four years* since 2015.
Damn.
Neues vom Flughafen Bozen.
I wonder if the consider building a wye that could allow through-running connections between Stuttgart and Cologne, while still serving Frankfurt Hbf...
I know this from Italy. Whenever RFI does something something ETCS, a line gets closed for a month. And that could happen multiple times.
...Americans. You know, the ones who boast about the US' bombastic GDP and growth numbers. But no, nothing.
The part "not realizing how little we want to be a part of the US" also struck me in the Greenland saga. You'd imagine Greenland's PM literally saying "we choose Denmark... we choose the EU" (which Greenland isn't even a part of) could spark some surprised curiosity among liberal and centrist...
You know that the worst thing that could possibly happen to you is being "deported" back to Germany? And even that is quite unlikely...
No, it's on a regular one-way street without bikeway.
You still have quite a few international organizations with French as the official working or treaty language. Either because the organization is so peripheral that nobody really cares, or because it's become astonishingly difficult to change that now, e.g. the EU court system.
When I got an International Driving Permit in Italy in 2019 it was all French, with translations into additional languages in the footnotes :-) The 2025 edition, though, is in English.
Really? I know quite a few of these in South Tyrol.
