Opinion: In the age of AI, the fog of war thickens Amid the global seduction of using AI in all aspects of work, the military is now leaning on AI tools to carry out the ugly business of war

My latest op-ed. The fog of war in the age of AI will become thicker. Science fiction has become realist and under the Trumps administration, any potential guardrails are being degraded at warp speed 🧡https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-in-the-age-of-ai-the-fog-of-war-thickens/

The Trump Administration's Geopolitical Blind Spot The Trump administration’s strategic thinking is rudimentary at best and slanted at worst.

I don’t think the Trump administration realizes how much it has benefited from Russia’s war in Ukraine. danieldrezner.substack.com/p/the-trump-...

Drone strikes on Amazon Web Services facilities this week in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain highlight the vulnerability of cloud facilities β€” prominent symbols of US tech power in the region and hard to defend against air attack.

Fars News Agency, an outlet affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said on Thursday that Iran targeted Amazon and Microsoft facilities in recent drone strikes.

Experts say Amazon’s facilities were likely targeted by Iran. Microsoft said it had not experienced any outages in the region.

The strikes mark what is believed to be the world’s first military attack against the US β€œhyperscalers” that dominate the global cloud computing market.

That could create a chilling effect on the UAE and Saudi Arabia’s plans to spend billions of dollars on local AI infrastructure in the coming years, a crucial plank of the oil-rich states’ efforts to diversify their economies.

β€œThe Iranians view data centres as part of the conflict,” said Matt Pearl, a director at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think-tank.

128 WTO members fail at 11th attempt to formalise plurilateral investment deal For two years now, three quarters of WTO members have found consensus blocked on adding their deal to WTO rules even though non-participants would be free riders

If at first you don't succeed, try, try ... 128 participants in the WTO agreement on investment facilitation will again seek consensus to add their "plurilateral" deal to be added to WTO rules when ministers meet this month

This is a profound continental divide. Canadians overwhelmingly view other Canadians, even those unlike them, as being good people. Americans, more than any other country, view their neighbours and fellow citizens as bad people. Anti-Americanism flourishes in the United States

Iran attacks show the perils of following America’s economic lead [FREE TO READ] A growth plan of renewable energy and diversified trade is far better than guzzling fossil fuels and aligning with the US

My Trade Secrets today. Latest superpower energy offers to emerging markets:

China - cheap green tech to wean you off hydrocarbons.
US - coercion into trade deal to buy US fossil fuels, then huge chaotic war creating global oil shock.

article assumes that Trump could simply cancel USMCA (with six months notice). Given wide support for USMCA from US business that's unlikely. He's right that we will live with uncertainty for some time to come. But that's been true since before Confederation. There's no cure for geography

Are Gulf states running out of missile interceptors? Their rulers insist not but they are burning through their stockpiles fast

The war in Iran is likely to cause a huge global shortage of air defense with dire implications for Ukraine. The Gulf states, US, Israel are using an enormous amount of Patriot interceptors. We can produce about 600/yr. They are using that up in 1-2 days. So... 1/

There's been a lot of debate within the Democratic establishment about what rhetoric to use via ICE.

Well, an incumbent doesn't lose by 48 percentage points very oftenβ€”and her vote on collaborating with ICE was the defining issue here.
