Why it isn't quite so cut and dry.
New this week: I looked at why there's no real evidence supporting the idea that murder is falling because of improved trauma care.

I know one of your previous analyses referenced local resources aimed at violence and adjacent issues as a factor. It will be important to keep an eye on that for this year's numbers. Esp. as ARPA funds affecting those resource surges taper off and then go away in 2026

Looking at the historic reduction in US homicides from many angles. I appreciate the Real-Time Crime Index data - 12-month rolling trends for 570 cities 2018-2025. But this graph from U Chicago Crime Lab made me appreciate what Baltimore and St Louis have accomplished from their peak to 2025.

2025 Year in Review: A Remarkable Drop In Crime
Crime almost certainly fell an enormous amount in 2025.
Crime in the US almost certainly fell at a historic clip in 2025 led by the largest drop in murder ever recorded. The US likely had the lowest murder & property crime rates since at least 1960 & lowest violent crime rate since the mid-60s. My year in review:

The price of belonging is inconvenience. Are we still willing to pay it?
Every time we choose people over convenience, we invest in community. The real question in our homes, workplaces and democracies is whether we are willing to pay that price.
We've made it very easy to cut out the messy, time-consuming stuff that actually builds real relationships.
But "inconvenience is the cost of community," and if you want a village, it takes choosing people over convenience.
