Thankyou for such a glowing review!

Bioarchaeologist: archaeology | isotopes | osteology | palaeopathology. Areas of study include medieval plague and diet in early modern Ireland. Currently a PDRA on the RATTUS project applying isotope analysis to archaeological rats. All views my own!
Thankyou for such a glowing review!
Thankyou!
Isotope analysis of medieval Cambridge skeletons indicates that social status strongly influenced diet, with wealthier individuals consuming more animal protein than poorer townspeople.
๐ฐ Chemical signatures preserved in human bones show how social inequality in medieval England could be "measured at the dinner table" ๐ฝ๏ธ

The research was carried out as part of the Wellcome Trustโfunded โAfter the Plagueโ project. Iโm incredibly grateful to my ATP co-authors and colleagues for their support and guidance throughout. If youโre interested, you can learn more about the wider project here: www.aftertheplague.org 4/4
Among other findings, the results suggest that friars consumed more meat and/or fish, while other groups appear to have had more limited access to animal protein. These differences offer new insight into lived experience in a medieval town 3/4
By analysing โordinaryโ townspeople, friars, and individuals buried at the medieval Hospital of St John, we were able to identify dietary differences between social groups 2/4
My first proper first-author paper has been published in Antiquity! The article is fully open access, so itโs free for anyone to read and share. The research came out of my PhD and uses a โwhole-townโ isotopic analysis approach to explore diet in Medieval Cambridge๐บ 1/4

New paper out, possibly one of the most tedious projects of my life... it's working name was Project ARDUOUS and boy howdy did it live up to its name ๐งช๐บ

Incredible article which points out that it often collectively costs more to apply for scarce research funding than the funds awarded to the successful proposals.
What an absurd system we've built in the service of efficiency and competition.

Dear headline writers. Could you consider substituting 'delighted' fur 'shocked' and 'intrigued' for 'baffled' - thanks, archaeologists.

As Uni management continues to disrupt our work, important to remember the background. Part of UCU series State of the Uni 24-5, here's a summary of the vandalistic act that led to the closure of the Archaeo Dept at Sheff Uni. Share! @sheffielducu.bsky.social ucu.group.shef.ac.uk/campaigns/st...
Great to see BABAO making an impact and maybe some progress on the sale of human remains in the UK.

Great to see the impact the #BABAO #saleofhumanremainstaskforce is having. Shout out to Dr Lauren McIntyre @noddinggoth.bsky.social for laying the issues out so clearly in the interview www.patrickpester.com/post/mp-call...
Important ethical issues surrounding the trade and sale of human remains were raised at PMQs today by Bell Ribeiro-Addy following discussions with BABAO:

presentation slide titled 'The RATTUS project and the role of ZooMS in large multidisciplinary studies' is displayed at the University of York. The slide features a rat image and logos from ERC and UK Research and Innovation. Below the projection screen, a speaker in a light-coloured t-shirt (David Orton) stands at a podium with a laptop, while another presenter (Sam Presslee) in a white shirt is seated at the table.

So here we are. A lot's changed since I (David) stepped back from Twitter a few years ago. For a start my rat work has grown into a major research project, RATTUS, thanks to the ERC & UKRI - see sites.google.com/york.ac.uk/rattus/
More new followers- hello! As an introduction, I am currently a PDRA on the RATTUS project (@archaeorattus.bsky.social), applying isotope analysis to archaeological rats. If you want to find out more, heres an intro post I wrote for the RATTUS blog: the-rattus-project.blogspot.com/2024/09/meet... ๐บ
Wondered why I suddenly had lots of new followers! Great idea, hello all ๐
