I'm only fancy virtually. In real life, I'm just a boneless blob with dyed hair. It's a fashion choice for sure.
I'm continuing my tradition of writing science heroes who are more brains than brawn with my latest Shadowrun story, The Big Spill, which is available for free download this month and only this month. Need some fodder for your e-reader? Pick up a copy FOR SCIENCE!

I'm in the cast of Echoes Under Ashwood, a Call of Cthulhu actual play podcast where Gen X snark meets cosmic horror. Can't wait to share our first episode with you. My alter ego Bex is... something.

I would very much like to be Mark Hamill, but I am probably Unspecified Job Type.
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Damn. That's more right than I want it to be.
Thank you, friend!

Smurfin' same here.
The more I think about this, the more I crack up.
My brain just exploded.
I'm simultaneously cramming 3 different franchises into my brain for potential new projects, and boy is it a jumble in there. What are the worst crossovers you can think of? Personally, I think Smurf Star Wars would probably break me.
That last point is sad but all too true.
Absolutely agree. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say, "Does writing have political impact by default?"
I wasn't thinking "stick it to the man!" when I wrote Lucius--except maybe for the choice to subvert Lovecraft himself--but I also knew how it would be perceived. It's an odd dichotomy.
I absolutely agree with all of this. I mean, depending on how you look at it, existing in the world is political. The stories we choose to tell definitely have a worldview behind them... it's part of the reason that AI will never be able to do what we do.
Ope. I've done it now. I've mentioned AI.
Itβs a weird, complicated topic, and Iβm interested to hear your take. Is writing political by default?
Does that count as political? Probably. But should it? βAnyone can be a heroβ should not be a controversial statement, but some people seem to have taken it that way.
I love an underdog, like the 60-something gay Black protagonist of Lucius Galloway or the medic hero at the heart of my Warhammer story, The Strength of Symbols. I love flawed protagonists who persevere despite their trauma, like Ghost Rider and the coven in Witches Unleashed.
On the surface, youβd probably say I write mostly fluff. I specialize in monsters, heroes who say something pithy before wading into fights, and things that blow up in slow motion. But I definitely write about the world I want to live in.
(And BTW, thank you, Andrew, for the insightful review.)
One review for my book The Forbidden Visions of Lucius Galloway has stuck with me ever since. It says, βMany book spaces have had this erroneous claim lately that reading isnβt political and a book like this perfectly highlights why YES IT VERY MUCH IS.β
Is writing political by default? A thread...

The cover of Kaiju Unleashed. A portrait of Godzilla in day-glo colors.
A lot of my work is research, and some days, it's a ton of fun. Today is one of those days.
Coming soon....
Last night, I dreamt that I was a character in Ultima: Quest for the Avatar, and I didn't want to wake up, which says something about the world and also how awesome that game was.
Some great new YA releases out this week highlighted by the fine folks at @bookriot.bsky.social, including a familiar Pixietail-filled title...

Kirkus has spoken! If you like geek cred and snark, might I suggest that you preorder SNAGGED before it hits shelves tomorrow?
