🎯 Finally, age-dependent risks in morbidity and mortality mean that targeting broad age groups in federative units with high CHIKV burden would maximize efficiency as immunization begins
On average, 4 in 100,000 infections were fatal. This number rises to 40 deaths per 100,000 infections in individuals aged 70+.
🔎Approximately 1% of infections were laboratory confirmed, but female infections were 1.8 times more likely to be detected.
We found that 18.3% of the population was infected between 2014 and 2024 (equivalent to 40M infections), with substantial spatiotemporal heterogeneities in attack rates.
📈 Pooling information from serology, case, and mortality data, we reconstructed the epidemiology of CHIKV in Brazil and projected the potential impact of recently licensed vaccines. Some key results:
