43 years later this book found a new home

A book called “The Bone whisperers”. The cover depicts a hand of an older woman holding a sheet of paper with pictures of men who went missing during the Bosnian War in the nineties.

I happen to be staying in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the period marking 30 years after #Srebrenica so I picked up this book, “The Bone Whisperers” by Taina Tervonen. I recommend it to those interested in learning about the long term consequences of gen@cide. It’s no light reading but pertinent.

I truly loved this post, regardless of how jealous I felt!

If the six is not enough I recommend the seasons quartet and his excellent book on Edvard Munch. On the other hand, I couldn’t get through the Morning Star. I’m a fan but I think he should stick to what he does best, autofiction and essay.

It’s publication day for The Penguin Book of Polish Short Stories. It took 39 authors 100 years to write, and me about 4 years to compile and translate, with the help of 11 other translators. It aims to show the variety and brilliance of modern Polish literature.

Ah I’m looking forward to reading this one. Curious to know your thoughts on it!

What blows my mind is I grew up in a relatively liberal part of Poland that historically doesn’t vote conservative (Kuyavian-Pomeranian). Yet growing up it still felt so hostile, nationalistic, homophobic, you name it. I can’t imagine how lonely being progressive feels in places like Podlasie.

Exactly. Also, writers are not the ones who created this problem and likely won’t be the ones to solve it. Not on their own anyway.

I agree. From a reader’s perspective I think the author’s gender only becomes an issue if one exclusively reads male writers. Same with queer and POC writers. But the readers who realise this are already headed in the right direction. Beyond that it should not be a competition by any means.
