Android was built on the diversity and openness of its ecosystem. It was the platform that (honestly) led me to pursue my career. Now, though, Android is a sterile, near-impregnable wall -- and Google will continue building that wall until the 'open' Android we have is encased in it.

The logo of the "Keep Android Open" campaign is an Android robot dressed as Darth Vader. Across the top it says "I AM ALTERING THE DEAL" in all caps, and below the robot it says "Pray I don't alter it further".

This is a reference to how Android acquired a massive catalog of apps be making access open to the platform back in the day, and Google assuring it would remain open, as opposed to the iOS platform which was (and still is) very restricted.

And, of course, Star Wars.

#Google will cut off independent developers to #Android if they do not register with Google first. This will kill independent platforms like @fdroidorg.bsky.social and severely impede FLOSS devs from creating apps for Android.

I feel like all Discord has learned from the backlash is that they need to be more subtle about how and to whom they're selling your data in the future.

Especially after the IPO, they're not going to decide to stop profiting off your personal data out of the goodness of their hearts.

With MyOshi blooming in the indie VTubing space, I finally have a use for my dusty and aging degree.

Oh wait, some of my worst academic performances were in web design. Whoops.

It's definitely targeting a specific niche for sure. It's very laser-focused on giving that MySpace and forum experience, which does alienate it from the more typical social media user (let's face it, many people haven't used either MySpace or forums in a while). Still, I do like it for that reason.

I'm not surprised if it's due to the huge influx of users -- but I'm also equally not surprised if it was getting DDoS'd. It's not as if a LOIC is expensive to fire up.

Thank you! I was torn between this red and keeping Windows 9x's teal-blue, but I figured I'd go all out on the red.

I can't believe I spent two whole hours fixing up this MySpace clone. Two hours well-spent, I'd say.

Okay so I finally got around to reading the @fluxer.app dev's (long!) blog post and... his take on federation is literally the exact same thing I independently suggested.

10/10 this guy knows what he's doing. This is going to work.

I'm going to be switching to a new and upcoming field. Haven't thought of a name for it yet, but it'll involve a lot of running.

Take this test to see if you'd be good at it too. I know I will.

maybe to no one's surprise, its vastly easier for me to tell AI generated humans from real than it is to tell the difference between AI art and drawn art.

Unfortunate reminder- maybe don't do callout posts on this stuff unless the "artist" outs themself.

Seeing this decade's version of 'Micro$oft'/'M$' (and, to a lesser extent, MicroShaft) has convinced me that we will never run out of playground insults and names for Microsoft.

P2: Starts with a beam that sweeps vertically, then creates a zone that excludes everyone but the aggro holder. Damage dealt from outside the zone is halved. Focus is solely on the aggro holder, with attacks inflicting ailment. On aggro holder's death, shift to the next aggro holder. Repeat. (2/2)

If Morgan was a two-phase boss fight:

P1: Line-based sword AoEs, forcing the party to scatter. Occasionally strikes a party member at the bottom of the aggro list with a projectile. Pushes anyone hit outward, threatening OHKO. Transitions to P2 with a map-wide horizontal sweeping beam. (1/2)

I've always felt a /little/ bit off with Fluxer (and Stoat too, to a lesser extent). We should encourage alternatives to Discord, but we should also encourage alternatives that aren't just "it's like Discord but not" -- remember, not every open source project is automatically safe!

With Windows 98, you can connect to the Internet quickly and easily. And, Windows 98 is even easier to use than Windows 95.

Setup will take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the speed of your computer.

Remember when Windows is supposed to make your computer more powerful, reliable, manageable, and entertaining? Surely one of those words still apply to modern Windows.

This was something my acquaintance did -- a small channel that was really about Flash games, random 2010-era YouTube videos, and UTAU covers (using an UTAU made from her voice).

I think the focus of VTubing being 'streaming' has definitely impacted people's perception of the media, too.

Excellent video regarding ChatGPT's recent headline-inducing 'discovery'. It's very easy to take a topic beyond the domain of the common folk to sell the illusion of intelligence.

I've used Wolfram Mathematica before. What does this offer for the resources it consumed?

This isn't a matter of "my [service/product I use] is better than yours". It's about being functionally aware of what you use on the daily. Your convenience is a currency to tech companies -- they want /you/ to stay.

But you don't have to. It doesn't have to be now. Just knowing is enough for now.

You don't need this reminder, but I'll echo it again: complacency is what led us to censorship. Complacency is what led us to trackers on every inch of the web. Complacency is why people carve out hiding holes from the prying eyes, ready to rip them apart.

Seek alternatives. Reject complacency.
