It's wild how there are at least 20-30 people in the Trump administration who are each,, somehow, the most contemptible person you've ever seen in your life. Just an M.C. Escher staircase of loathsomeness.

White House: the witness’sΒ allegations are β€œcompletely baseless” and β€œbacked by zero credible evidence.”

Fact: FBI found her credible enough to interview repeatedly, and she received a financial settlement from the Epstein estate.

Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success.

The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted.

What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards.

Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.

Good riddance (again) to Vinay Prasad at the FDA. The only problem is that under this administration we can only expect him to be replaced by someone as bad or worse.

Great opportunity!

I work fairly closely with the grant-witness team. Good humans and an impressive array of skill sets.

I always feel like a complete data science amateur during our calls.

I guess "I was a depraved scumbag who was close to an unrepentant sex offender with whom I enjoyed making jokes about women and perhaps worse" is a bit more damaging to myself and my institution (and probably harder to admit to myself).

If Axel is the "Richard" in these documents providing advice about pardon strategy and joking about women having sex with sexual predators, Axel's apology for "an error in judgement" seems like more than a bit of an understatement.

My quote of the day

The promises of this world are, for the most part, vain phantoms; and to confide in one's self, and become something of worth and value is the best and safest course.

A pen and ink drawing of a dragon by Michelangelo

Michelangelo was born on this day in 1475 in Caprese near Florence, Italy. The painter, sculptor, architect and poet is widely considered to be one of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance period.

In 1953, at Churchill's instigation, and with his assistance, the CIA launched two coups against the democratically elected government of Mohammad Mosaddegh, the 2nd of which succeeded. Why? Because he rightly sought to nationalise Iran's oil supplies, which the UK was taking: seizing Iran's wealth.
