I'm looking for resources/slides for teaching undergrads about causality in research design and statistics--anyone have any recommendations? Thanks so much! @stpteachpsych.bsky.social
"The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Our country is currently bending away from justice, and the harmful consequences of this are real and significant (see thread below). Our moral arc will not bend back until we pull it ourselves.
Measuring grit: a comprehensive research framework
@tjroyuh.bsky.social made an infographic about what researchers need to know about grit in terms of measurement and validity debates:
Great
Thank you Dr. Master
Dr. Master, Iβve recently developed a keen interest in computer science education. Although I hold a degree in computer science and engineering, I believe itβs an opportune time to explore this field further. Iβd love to hear your thoughts on this.
Please share with the computer science education community and other data lovers! (13/14)

Three graduate students on Zoom with their professor and Dr. Avi Kaplan
In today's Achievement Motivation seminar, we had the pleasure of a visit from Dr. Avi Kaplan, who told us how he developed the Dynamic Systems Model of Role Identity. @aera-motsig.bsky.social @summerrobinson.bsky.social @tjroyuh.bsky.social
We talked about control-value theory today in Achievement Motivation, so we brought back this art activity (see thread below). @summerrobinson.bsky.social's "Yay! Motivation!" drawing took home the competitive prize, although @tjroyuh.bsky.social's doodled ghost was adorable. @aeratepsig.bsky.social
Dr. Carol Dweck, the Mindset Queen, joined a group of grad students in Achievement Motivation class (and asked for their thoughts on Instagram and Tiktok)
We talked about Mindsets today in Achievement Motivation, and we were honored by a visit from the always-gracious Carol Dweck! @summerrobinson.bsky.social @tjroyuh.bsky.social @zachbaquet.bsky.social @aera-motsig.bsky.social @aeratepsig.bsky.social (1/N)
Well I had lot to say. But i donβt have time to explain.
Return of Ben Heddy's Lego self-efficacy activity today in Achievement Motivation class! Students built a Lego set with 1) the box and the instructions, 2) just the box but no instructions, or 3) no box AND no instructions. @tjroyuh.bsky.social @summerrobinson.bsky.social @zachbaquet.bsky.social
Three graduate students holding up their Lego creations.
We had a great discussion about classroom barriers, safe classroom climates where we aren't afraid of making mistakes, emotions, and things that affect our outcome and efficacy expectations. Also, we all loved Summer's Lego cat! π₯°
A great comment from a student about what to take away from his visit: "Famous researchers are regular people!" π₯° (4/4)
We asked him about how situated expectancy-value theory developed over time, how we could incorporate belonging into it, how grad students navigate priorities with mentors' expectations, how to think about racialized cost and Black joy in the context of Black parent belonging, and much more. (2/4)
His advice to grad students for getting used to constructive feedback: "If the person giving you feedback didnβt believe in you, they wouldnβt be giving you this feedback." (3/4)
Dr. Allan Wigfield joins Allison Master and a group of graduate students over Zoom
It is always a treat to have Allan Wigfield come chat with students in my Achievement Motivation seminar! @tjroyuh.bsky.social @zachbaquet.bsky.social @summerrobinson.bsky.social @aera-motsig.bsky.social (1/4)

Fostering Sense of Belonging in Science Education: The Role of Self-Concept, Interest, and Studentsβ Perceptions of Teachersβ Beliefs Abstract This study examines how studentsβ perceptions of their teacherβs beliefs, student self-concepts, and interest in science influence students' sense of belonging in science education. Using the situated expectancy-value theory (SEVT) framework, middle and high school students (N = 1,194) completed surveys about their science motivation. Students who believed they were good at science (self-concept) and found it interesting were more likely to feel a sense of belonging in science classrooms. Additionally, studentsβ perceptions of their teachersβ beliefs about their abilities significantly predicted motivation and engagement. However, demographic factors such as gender and race did not significantly moderate links between belonging and other motivational factors. This suggests that motivation and perceptions play a universal role in shaping students' belonging in science. These findings highlight the importance of creating supportive science classrooms where teachers encourage student competence and curiosity. Fostering inclusive science environments can enhance student engagement and motivation. Keywords: Situated expectancy value theory (SEVT), self-concept, sense of belonging, motivation, interest, science education
@tjroyuh.bsky.social wrote an AERA conference submission about how ability self-concepts, interest, and positive perceptions of teachers' beliefs about their ability in science supported feelings of belonging for secondary students.
Thank you Dr. Master
Thrilled to announce that Iβve been awarded the Joshua Weinstein Memorial Endowed Scholarship at UH College of Education for the 2025-2026 academic year! π A huge honor and a big step toward my educational goalsβgrateful for this amazing support! #Scholarship #UHCOE #ProudMoment
Photos of academic and personal accomplishments this year in our lab, including LOTS of cute baby pictures!
This year had a lot of ups and downs, but our Identity & Academic Motivation lab got together today to celebrate our accomplishments! This is a fantastic group of students, and I'm grateful for the time I get to spend with them.
Wow! Dr. Dweck ππ
