And to think we’ve had a commercial wood burning restaurant move into neighbourhood 5yrs ago without consult or warning, permitted by @cityofnorthvan.bsky.social. And @metrovancouverorg.bsky.social lets them fill the air we breathe with smoke unabated. Even enters our home! @globalnews.ca

This is heartbreaking 💔

Completely agree on the heat pumps!
I also strongly believe banning wood burning is a fast, easy “win” for both humans and #climate/environment. It’s a natural stepping stone to banning worse climate offenders and providing a line to catch bigger fish and build momentum. Who doesn’t want clean air?

While fossil fuels may be the main character energy in climate change, wood burning contributes significantly to black carbon, which worsens near-term warming and is devastating to public health, especially in urban cities where it is not necessary in residences nor businesses. It’s a fast win!

Metro Vancouver unlikely to hit 2030 climate targets as total emissions climb Despite progress, Metro Vancouver's greenhouse gas emissions are still higher than they were in 2010, even as per capita carbon emissions decline. A report partially blamed it on population growth.

I reckon that’s due to the large public face of the oil industry and their proponents, their political cheerleaders. The wood burning industry and their lobbyists are alive and well, and pushing the fallacy of wood burning as “clean,” and a great alternative fuel less harmful to earth and humans ☠️

Thanks Ellen 🙏 Wood burning in Canada is a tradition that needs a second look. A hard stare, really. No longer can we deny the serious harm it causes the environment, the public, the toxicity of particulate matter on shared outdoor air AND indoor air. The science behind the facts is clear and solid

And while @kaosdog.bsky.social points out the vast and real harms due to residential wood burning, the restaurant industry is just as bad and, so it seems, flies under the radar! Generally situated in urban areas, they go unregulated, under reported and agencies admit the harm health but do nothing

Smoke with nasty odors being emitted by Grab & Go restaurant on Lonsdale in North Vancouver. Hi @metrovancouverorg.bsky.social @cityofnorthvan.bsky.social when might you do something to stop the #toxic, chemical by-product air #pollution spewed into homes/lungs daily by restaurants? #Smoke/odor is all over neighbourhood. Be green. Stop virtue signaling.

Did you know that #airpollution, smoke, dust, and pollen can trigger dangerous #asthma attacks?

With the right inhaled treatment and clean air policies, we can fight back.

"When I first found out about #WoodBurning & the #AirPollution it causes, I wanted to ignore it. I love a fire! But it's very hard to do something that you know is killing your family, so after a few more fires I stopped, & realised they were actually a huge pain. Now we just rely on the radiator."

Sadly this is the same guy who’s touting our mayor, @mayorlindabuchanan.bsky.social and her “healthiest small city in the world” tagline when the reality is there are no regulations or bylaws for commercial wood and charcoal burning on the City’s main “Great Street” #NorthVan
