Hava a look at Backpack Battles, there's a free demo on Steam. Not the best looking game but it deals with inventory quite well. Not encumberance but it has a grid you can put bags in and your stuff can only go in the bags. Need more space - buy more bags,until the grid is full.

He loves dishing it out tho
