There's a reason that reading comprehension is on basically every standardized test. If you can't read something, understand it and then communicate the contents to someone else, you're gonna have problems in life. It's hard to think critically when you can't input information well.
I grew up in a house full of books (my family is ~75% teachers and librarians). One thing I know helped make school, and life, easier for me was the reading skills that were actively developed and encouraged when I was a child.
Even in an increasingly digital world reading is an important skill.
