Predicted bird abundance and ± SE per 4 ha for (A) all species; (B) farmland birds; and (C) woodland birds across the three different land-use classifications. Dark bars represent all species and light bars represent Red- and Amber-listed Birds of Conservation Concern, per group.
Our new paper, free to read in Bird Study, compares bird counts on solar farms and adjacent farmland. For solar farms with infrequently cut/grazed grass and bounded by hedges/trees, both farmland and woodland birds were more abundant than on adjacent arable land www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Cost of local public transport for kids/families is an issue for us. We travelled in Germany on Deutschland tickets with the kids in the summer. Incredible that we could buy a ticket for all public transport in Germany for less than half the price of our son's school bus pass on a public bus.

We had some very nasty stuff happening in my son's age group locally that led me into the group chats (although he does have a smart phone...), and drew a similar conclusion. It's a captive audience and a media platform though, so if focus could be broadened it could be a great opportunity!

I asked a question along these lines in a national SFC group recently, and I think the answer is no, they're not. Suggested simple things like a bit of pavement chalk in the summer, very little interest. Feels very shifted baseline, a lot of people just don't see the context even if it's explained.
