Needle and Syringe Programmes are a vital public health intervention for reducing transmission of hepatitis C. New data on injecting equipment provision in Scotland found that approximately 2.3 million needles and syringes were distributed in 2023/24: shorturl.at/DhR0A
Today, @NHSEngland has announced that all new patients registering at GP practices will be asked if they had a blood transfusion before 1996, as part of a drive to find undiagnosed patients affected by the infected blood scandal.

Cross-party MPs and MSPs have united to call for opt-out HIV and hepatitis testing in Scottish Emergency Departments.

Alongside the new report, UKHSA has established a genomics surveillance programme, to look for genetic markers of drug resistance: www.gov.uk/government/n...
However, challenges to achieving and maintaining elimination include inadequate provision of needles and syringes and stigma impacting engagement with services.
This success has been largely credited to the efforts of NHS England’s HCV Elimination Programme, with increased testing and improved access to Direct Acting Antivirals (DAAs) with improved treatment efficacy since 2015.
Hepatitis C prevalence is now estimated at 55,900 in England. Hepatitis C-related mortality is now at its lowest in nearly 10 years, falling from 0.69 per 100,000 people in 2015 to 0.41 per 100,000 in 2023.
