James Lovell, the commander of Apollo 13 who helped turn a failed moon mission into a triumph of on-the-fly can-do engineering, has died. He was 97.
Iβm nervous there will be too many hot babes at the Weird Al show!
Itβs been five days since floods in Texas killed at least 111 people and FEMAβs Acting Administrator David Richardson still hasnβt made a single public or internal statement.

Scattered storms are expected through the Memorial Day weekend across Central Alabama. Most widespread coverage of storms expected Monday. Some storms could be intense with gusty winds, small hail, and heavy downpours thanks to higher instability each afternoon. #alwx

Forecast model showing rounds of scattered storms Thursday and Friday across Central Alabama.
The stormy pattern continues for Central Alabama today and Friday. I think pretty much everyone will get a storm at some point between now and Friday evening. #alwx

Stormy pattern continues today and tomorrow. Some heavy downpours, small hail, and gusty winds possible in the strongest storms. #alwx
Is it also on the gov't chopping block?
This plan makes Americans much, much less safe.
The plan would include eliminating NSSL (research has led to massive advancements in tornado forecasting, warning, and detection), The NCEI (our federal database of climatology and weather history), CIMMS (major satellite meteorology research, esp. tropical) and huge cuts to wx satellites.
A forecast map for Wednesday morning showing parts of North Alabama with the chance for some light, spotty accumulations of slushy wet snow. Far North Alabama near the Tennessee border could see 0.5-1" of snow. For Central and South Alabama, only a cold rain is forecast.
Snow in Alabama Wednesday? There's a shot for some slushy wet snow to mix in with cold rain across North Alabama late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. For most in Central Alabama, this should just be a cold rain event. We'll update you if anything changes. #alwx
Destructive straight line winds and a few embedded tornadoes are possible as this line pushes across Central Alabama tonight.

Were on track for a round of strong to severe storms overnight tonight. Damaging wind and a few tornadoes are the main threats. Some isolated small hail and isolated flooding are also possible. Main timeframe in Central Alabama is 10 pm - 3 AM. Stay Weather Aware! #alwx
Over the past week, the forecast was always coming down to the battle between the dry, cold air at the surface and the moisture to our south.
Also, just keep in mind none of this is set in stone. Things can still change based on what the temperature profiles look like.
A lot of moving parts and complications to Fridayβs forecast. Weβre really trying to thread the needle here on precip type. Understand it only takes a degree or twos difference either way to change this from snow and sleet, to freezing rain, to just a cold rain. Be prepared for travel issues! #alwx
Backwards Temperature Alert for Monday!
I certainly hope this is accurate. There were some great things that happened for me in 2024 but it was also a very dark and depressing year too.
Thereβs definitely still some question as to how unstable the atmosphere will be as storms roll into West Alabama tonight, but it certainly looks like there will be enough unstable air and plenty of shear and wind energy to support tornadoes, destructive winds, and maybe some smaller hail. #alwx
Built different in Birmingham.
Be prepared for strong to severe storms from mid afternoon Saturday to pre-dawn Sunday. There remains some question as to the quality of the ingredients coming together to support severe weather, but we could be dealing with damaging wind, hail, isolated flooding, and tornadoes. Be prepared! #alwx
