My family's never been impoverished in any real capacity AFAIK, but my parents basically could never afford a house on what they make, and that position probably would have drastically changed the trajectory of me and my brother's lives if not for the systemic sexism built into Christian culture.

Oh, actually, y'know what also clinched it for me? Finding out directly from my mom that all of the churches and the Baptist organization she was part of early on were so sexist to her that they rejected her for a huge position within the church solely because she was a mother with two kids.

Really it was more a "death by 1000 cuts" in realizing the Bible makes no fucking sense for how literal most Christians tend to interpret it, watching people I respected side with people who despise me, and realizing religion and untreated mental illness do NOT combo well in the slightest.

The thing that definitively sealed my deconstruction for good was probably watching the people from my mom's church, who helped raise me, basically abandon any sense of decency to worship Trump's every move. Any chance of me returning to being a Christian absolutely died in his first term.

I don't know if I can necessarily pinpoint the exact moment it happened but I think having a religious psychosis episode as a teenager where my intrusive thoughts caused me to think I was blaspheming and therefore guaranteed to go to hell.
