It used to be that tieflings had a lot of variety in skin tones, nonhuman features, and so on. D&D 5E standardized them to all be the cause of Asmodeus and they all have the same sort of look (perhaps because the D&D people wanted an identifiable/iconic look for tieflings, to easier ID them in art).

I recently got into it again after Monte did a huge books and minis purge. Of course this happened 5-10 years after I got rid of all of my own minis, painted and unpainted, so I’m basically stating over .. with older eyes and an older back. :p

I had convos with D&D’s Jeremy Crawford and art director Richard Whitters about how they’d order orc art and the artist often turned in art with green orcs and they’d have to send it back to make it green.
*By “Im aware” I mean I wrote the orc chapter of Volo’s Guide To Monsters thar points this out (using decades of D&D color art).
Perhaps D&D art direction is so firm on this because Warhammer and Warcraft orcs are so iconically green that they had to double down on D&D orcs being grey?
And I’m aware* that D&D-style orcs are supposed to have grey skin, not green, but (1) I’ve played so much Warcraft that Im used to green orcs, (2) there are a lot more and richer painting options for green, and (3) i paint ghouls and zombies as grey/grey green so I want orcs to look different.

Painted some orc minis (BONES from @reaperminiatures.bsky.social ) and I mostly like how they turned out. The sculpts aren’t too busy, the faces have fun character. I painted them to match the yellow/green orc face tokens I posted the other day. I think I’ll redo the metallic green with steel.

Was teaching a ham radio intro course just now & covering prowords when someone asked about "actual." I explained it was a mil term & gave example of Adama saying GALACTICA ACTUAL. A guy in the session almost did a spit take because they have a conference room named that but he didn't know why.

My relationship to older not-that-tech-savvy folks makes me very aware of the shit silicon valley types expect to be obvious but really just isn't and this is why I'm begging people in positions of power to hire some midwesterners who care about people.
