How Much Energy Does It Take To Think? | Quanta Magazine Studies of neural metabolism reveal our brain’s effort to keep us alive and the evolutionary constraints that sculpted our most complex organ.

You’ve just gotten home from an exhausting day. All you want to do is put your feet up and zone out to whatever is on television. Though the inactivity may feel like a well-earned rest, your brain is not just chilling.

What Crystals Older Than the Sun Reveal About the Start of the Solar System | Quanta Magazine Microscopic crystals extracted from meteorites could help settle a debate about the birth of our patch of the Milky Way.

In 1969, a fireball appeared over Mexico. The Allende meteorite spread its debris over more than 500 square kilometers. Its chemical contents surprised scientists: It seemed to suggest that a nearby supernova triggered the formation of our solar system.

As a non AI tech person, I can see this behavior bleeding out to human to human interactions in some people, thus creating some serious issues. However, it might be a great dating tool to weed out those you don't wish to date. "Show me your AI prompts" could become a dating requirement.

Vehicle Tire Pressure Sensors Enable Silent Tracking Like many other features and systems in modern cars, tire pressure sensors leak sensitive data that can be abused by threat actors.

Security researchers have revealed that signals from tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMSs), required in U.S. cars since 2007, can be used to track vehicles from 40-50 meters away using devices costing $100.

TPMSs send a unique sensor identifier that never changes during the lifetime of the tire.

We could ask an LLM to quote constitutional law as it is written now. The LLM would not be giving legal advice, merely quoting established law.

Neutrons Illuminate the Magnetic Dance of Chiral Phonons Neutron scattering has provided a new and broader view of the twirling collective atomic vibrations in a magnetic crystal.

Researchers have used neutron scattering to enrich our understanding of chiral phonons. Like regular phonons, chiral phonons convey sound and heat, but they are also magnetic, thanks to the twirling motions they acquire from the symmetries of their host lattice.
