I've received an 'exclusive' invite to try Nature's new 'research assistant', which will burn down a forest to provide a 'summary of the paper' I'm reading and I have SUCH exciting news for them, that's called an 'abstract' and the actual authors already wrote it for me, no forest-burning required.
If it's any solace...

OK but what about now?

Not only is CCS expensive, it also doesn't solve methane leakage that comprises a big part of gas turbine emissions.
Read about it in our 2-pager, linked below!
In my view, the only way around this is through thorough preparation efforts that recognizes that refineries are closing and will continue to close, while also ensuring that people have access to reliable (carbon-free) options to go where they need to go.
If we botch refinery transitions, I fear that a similar "the liberals pushed for refinery closures and now your gasoline is too expensive" logic will emerge. To an extent, we're already seeing this.
I worry that we'll see the same for refinery closures in California. Refineries are closing for many reasons: some related and many very unrelated to California's climate policies.
"And I see all these solar panels and I see all these wind turbines (...) and now electricity is more expensive."
I think @hankgreen.bsky.social is right on the money here when he expects people to buy into this type of messaging.

Never thought I'd be vibing to a song about stowaway aquarium snails, but Aesop Rock made it happen somehow. Amazing stuff.

With all that said, I do have a soft spot for using profitability to shoot down ideas that are silly for other reasons.
"Fine, if we play by your rules but account for real costs under realistic conditions, this is unprofitable and kind of a bad idea."
Not to mention that short-term band-aid fixes can be seen as more profitable or politically viable, while other long-term real solutions are dismissed as unprofitable or politically nonviable.
I suspect we'll see this play out in the California refinery and gasoline price discourse soon.
Been thinking about this a lot this past year, especially after reading The Price Is Wrong. (Only) focusing on profit ignores health, resilience, distribution, and so much more.

tbh the fluoride thing is probably the one I'm least worried about. The water isn't fluorinated back in the Netherlands and my teeth are A-OK. (Huge caveat though: dental care is way more affordable there.)

Has to be either Fakebreaker or Human Zone for me. I've listened to the whole thing multiple times though and love all the tracks!
Going to base my politics around AI entirely on this song by @thegoodnewscrew.bsky.social and probably some Deltron 3030 tracks.

Just give in and make chili! Or embrace the texture difference some other way! Does the trick for me every Sunday. My current favorite mix is Christmas Lima, Scarlet Runner, Midnight Black, and Santa Maria Pinquito beans; I really love the different firmnesses, as long as they are all cooked!
