Ironically, Birmingham is the only university or institution I've found that remotely any interest in supporting Romani history & Romani historians.
Given the challenges many Romani\traveller people as well as other minority groups have in traditional education this is utterly horrific.

It really is saying the quiet part out loud on social cleansing in universities. Suppose it's somewhat nice that someone's admitting to it
Thank you! I was reading your article on vagrant removal in Middlesex yesterday and was really useful!
The mix of vagrancy, Egyptian acts & enclosure acts is giving me a lot to think about.
Brilliant! Thank you!
Anyone have a lead on this?
I'm looking for somewhere online that has the full wording of the Vagrancy Acts from 1713/1714 and 1744.
If there were anything on 'Gypsies' under vagrancy law before 1824 that'd be great too as so far they appear to be missing in the scholarship I've read
You'd think! My personal mistake was doing history. I don't think the posh types don't think we're human - I'd have had a easier ride in animal biology or something π€£
Systemic racism against my people and anyone who rides for us.
There's a reason the sister diaspora invited us to the cookout.
But I got told for a GRT history job that they were looking for expertise in any other race, LGBT or disability history not Romani history this summer. So I already had my blacklisting for race confirmed π
You couldn't be more right. I am trouble, I show private schooling and Oxbridge or a fancy international uni isn't everything. Its crazy how deep down historian at most unis think their students are mostly thicker than them because of their race & class.
By saying this I'm very much trouble
Proud to announce I created the artwork for the book: βRoaming Britain: Gypsy, Traveller and Nomadic Communities in the Built Environmentβ by Lauren Alderton and Alice Power, from RIBA π
Roaming Britain is available now! Online and in the bookshops π
As a working class & Romani scholar I'm already blacklisted from most places so I'm safe to say:
When ECRs have to anonomise for fear of blacklisting to complain - academics are the problem.
When those academics respond with 'I don't care I might lose my job' they're still the problem
Iβll say it again: Matthew Goodwin is, to an extent, the product of an academic field that is dedicated to the study of racists but routinely refuses to seriously or deeply engage with other academic work on race.
Congratualtions!!!! π₯³
Universities & academics have brought some of it on themselves.
Universities have expanded massively who they teach but not who they hire. Elitism/Classism is baked into the system & academics actively promote it. Those things are noticed as well as the myths, especially by working class grads
Interesting.
βThe number of βGypsy or Travellerβ students taking a degree course at university recorded by officials has risen from 105 in 2019/20 to 2,535 in 2023/24 [β¦]: [an] exponential rise [β¦] largely driven by Roma students, an investigation by the Travellers Times can reveal.β
After a grim 2025, and looking to a 2026 where the far-right are in the ascendancy, the only collective solution lies in anti-racism. As Angela Davis said βIn a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist.β

Who doesn't need a big orange afro to brighten their days
I've played it in the last year - still holds up.
I know this is screaming into the void but more support is needed to establish British Romani & Irish Traveller history in the academy.
If we want to talk about actual impact research can have - historians of both of the above (that doesn't mash them together) can do so much good.

Isn't that just one day cricket?
Autumn Olympics has got to be an indie band somewhere
That's kinda like when some people say their a 'first gen scholar' when they're the first in their family to a PhD though loads have done undergrads and masters π€£
The field of British βfar-right and fascismβ studies, which straddles political science, history & sociology, has yet to grapple with Goodwin. He began writing about the BNP & has ended up standing for a party filling the same political space. His earlier work shows traces of this later trajectory.
