"@historians.org's mission is to serve historians. Its principles commit it to take a stance “when public/private authorities, in the US or elsewhere, threaten the preservation of or free access to historical sources.” Yet it refuses to do so for Palestinians."

Sharing my review of @maryhicks.bsky.social's fascinating book Captive Cosmopolitans! In the new issue of Slavery & Abolition: doi.org/10.1080/0144...
Pls sign/share! UNC is preparing to cave to political pressure from the Heritage Foundation by publishing all syllabi online.
This puts a target on instructors' backs. It clears a path for abuse and endangers student safety.

***Nikki Keddie Book Award Winner***
Congratulations to IEHS Executive Board member @sfahrenthold.bsky.social for receiving the Nikki Beddie Book Award from the Middle East Studies Association for her Unmentionables. Textiles, Garment Work, and the Syrian American Working Class!
Over Thanksgiving the @historians.org violated its own bylaws to halt discussion of a member-supported revote on the Resolution to Oppose Scholasticide in Gaza at #AHA2026
Hear from Palestinian historians & AHA members about what this anti-democratic move means.

UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese has responded to Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon after he called her a “witch”, saying, “If I had the power to make spells... I would use it to stop your crimes once and for all.”

One day I will write a lengthy essay on the excruciating psychological pain the absurd practice of American leaf-blowing bestows upon me.
US President Trump says several Middle East allies have told him they’d “welcome the opportunity…to go into Gaza with a heavy force and ‘straighten out Hamas’” if the group violates the ceasefire aje.io/wllk1u
Gaza has around 20,000 unexploded Israeli bombs amid up to 70 million tonnes of rubble, posing a massive threat to Palestinians, as removal is blocked by Israel’s ban on heavy equipment, according to the Government Media Office.

Launching my new seminar on Saint-Domingue and the world of the Haitian Revolution—looking fwd to discussing excellent works, esp. new books by Marlene Daut, @juliagaffield.bsky.social, and @malickghachem.bsky.social.
Much of the cardboard and paper goods strewn about our homes are sold by a single private company, with its name, Uline, stamped on the bottom.
Many may not know that a multibillion-dollar fortune made on those ubiquitous products fuels far-right candidates across the country.

Israeli forces have launched a new wave of attacks on Gaza, killing at least 83 Palestinians, including 19 near al-Shifa and al-Ahli hospitals, the besieged enclave’s last functioning medical facilities aje.io/uwsj7b
Israel has dehumanised Palestinians for decades, eventually leading to the current Gaza genocide, say analysts.
My thanks also to Kirsten Schultz (Seton Hall) for a keen and generous review of Peopling for Profit that appeared earlier in @tamquarterly.bsky.social:

+I'm w/@thiagokrause.bsky.social re: the problem w/historical analogies: Itaboraí=slave trafficker ensconced in Brazilian political and banking institutions & going after liberal nemeses protesting conservative election rigging. Not a good normative example. www.opodereaescravidao.com/banco-de-dados
Good take by @ceclynch.bsky.social on the "reactionary offensive" & amnesty as a form of erasure. But must recall that "liberal democracy" hasn't worked for the growing numbers of non-unionized and gig workers filling the ranks of "reactionary populism"–so we must not idealize it either.
Anyway, here's an email I sent @UofCalifornia President Milliken and @UCBerkeley Chancellor Lyons, on their disgraceful decision to prematurely forward names to DOE for political harassment.
UC faculty, staff, students *systemwide* are in peril. Terrible, self-defeating choice.
Where is the doleful mourning of the punditry? In terms of magnitude, any which way they look at this, it exceeds any single tragedy by exactly thousands of levels.
Thank you to Jeffrey Lesser @Emory for his review in the latest American Historical Review (academic.oup.com/ahr/article/...) –very meaningful for me that a scholar of Brazil I so respect shares his generous take on Peopling for Profit (now open access! www.cambridge.org/core/books/p...).
For almost two centuries, the higher ed community has recognized that the presence of guns on campus inhibits the “practice of a responsible & critical mind.”
Guns rob faculty of the ability to ensure that the classroom remains the true & open marketplace of ideas at the core of academic freedom.
Peopling for Profit in now OPEN ACCESS! Many thanks to my editor @ceceliacancellaro.bsky.social at @universitypress.cambridge.org for making this happen.
