Text graphic which reads: Racism causes trauma and mental ill health. Our new research explores the nature of trauma experienced by people from racialised communities and calls for better support from mental health services.
Quote from research participant: “It was just, you know, white people are kings and Black people’s history started at slavery. So, I think from a young age that kind of has an impact.”
🧵1/2 If you've been affected by the trauma of racism, or are seeking to help people who are, our new guides will help. Racism causes trauma and mental illness. Public services that don't understand race, racism and trauma-informed care can compound this - for both people seeking support and workers

Text: Keeping children away from social media might sound like a quick and easy way to turn around the rising tide of mental distress among young people and protect children from a wide range of online harms, but it’s unlikely to be quite so simple. If the online world isn’t safe for children, how are we going to make the real world safer and more welcoming?
The Government has launched a consultation into children's digital wellbeing covering social media age bans. @andybell-centremh.bsky.social on how tackling online harms must be based on evidence & matched by a deeper understanding of what is causing the rise in mental distress. bit.ly/4aTwCEY

🔴 Spring Forecast Statement - 3 March 2026
YouTube video by UK Parliament
We are pleased the Chancellor used her statement today to focus on young people, but they must also invest in children and young people’s mental health. Poor mental health disrupts education and reduces employment opportunities, with huge costs to the economy. www.youtube.com/live/aftSIKc...

Text graphic which reads: public services often reproduce trauma rather than alleviate it. Mental health care is often not culturally sensitive, and doesn’t address the ways people experience multiple forms of discrimination.
Text graphic which reads: Trauma-informed care is inconsistently applied and rarely anti-racist. We need universal adoption of anti-racist and trauma-informed approaches to mental health care, backed up by the Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework.

Quote from research participant: “It was just, you know, white people are kings and Black people’s history started at slavery. So, I think from a young age that kind of has an impact.”
Quote from research participant: “...sometimes they can just be like covert and sometimes they can be like outright racist, but sometimes it’s just so low levels… it has a weary effect on a person.”
🧵2/3 People from racialised communities experienced historical trauma as a legacy of racism, slavery, segregation, compounded by the wearing effects of racial injustice in the present. And mental health care often doesn’t address the ways people experience multiple forms of discrimination.

Photo of a young Black man and a young woman ina headscarf in an office meeting. Text: Quote from Alee Buckley, Senior Lived Experience Practitioner: Being embedded at a strategic level means I can influence conversations as they unfold. I can gently interrupt language that depersonalises. I can help colleagues connect policy decisions to lived realities.
Budgets, policies and pathways are not neutral. They ripple outward into real lives. And when lived experience is embedded in leadership it can quietly reshape the system from within. Reflections on strategic lived experience leadership: www.centreformentalhealth.org.uk/the-differen...

Quote: For someone who has struggled with feelings of inadequacy, instead of perceiving increased worship as something that is encouraged, I would often see it as a form of pressure. I would constantly feel as though I should be doing more, and that what I was doing was not enough. Zainab Shafan-Azhar
Whilst Ramadan is a time of reflection, gratitude and increased worship, for some with mental health difficulties, this period brings pressure. In her blog, Zainab Shafan-Azhar reflects on her experiences and shares techniques that have helped her: www.centreformentalhealth.org.uk/managing-my-...
