There are so many heart-wrenching and noble reasons to oppose AI, and I do oppose it on those grounds.
But in the quotidian, ignoble category of reasons to oppose it, Adobe now-with-AI also spells my name wrong when I open my own resume on my own computer. Anyone else have this experience?

Just finalized the slide deck for @outtoinnovate.bsky.social workshop tomorrow and it has EVERYTHING:
- Norman Rockwell
- Star Trek
- LEGO
- bird photography
- David Hyde Pierce's Treasure Planet freakout about doctorates
- multiple applications of Bayesian statistics
- Portland, for some reason

after a spell of reading mostly poetry, essays and onlinery, I read DINOSAURS by Lydia Millet in one immersive Saturday. Much I admire, but one thing I keep marveling at is the atmospheric pressure of the book. How she adjusted it so subtly that I felt the plot's weather systems moving in and away.

Florence ICE detainee dead after untreated tooth infection, official says An ICE detainee, who had been at a Florence detention center for four months, died Monday following an untreated tooth infection.

This is horrifically cruel. β€œA Haitian asylum seeker held for four months at Florence Correctional Center died Monday at a Scottsdale hospital due to complications from an infected tooth, a local official in Chandler said Tuesday.” An excruciating and wholly preventable death. No words are adequate.

I love caves, inflatables and science communication. This month is #colorectal cancer awareness month - the disease that has been ruining me the last 20 months. Get a colonoscopy folks. It’s not as fun as what I’m doing here but it ain’t that bad either.

And reading this brought back the anticipatory grief of Callais. I'm not ready for the demolition that court watchers say is all but certain; I'm still grieving the Loper Bright decision, and Skrmetti, and Shelby County v Holder, and Bush v. Gore, et al, which is why I couldn't be a court watcher.

Real skill to write like this, to both outsiders and insiders, without sacrificing voice for clarity or clarity for voice.

While I'm rarely glad for the *occasion of a late-breaking dispatch from One First these days, I'm glad for the sensemaking that the writing helps me (as a non-specialist) do.

Eek. I am sorry to hear that. And given tales from peer review, I don't doubt it is happening in this pedagogical space, as well. Solidarity with your kid and original thinking.

Northern California’s first condor egg in 100 years reported in redwood tree

Who COULDN’T use some good news? β€˜ Scientists with the Yurok Tribe say that two of dozens of condors released to the wild in Humboldt County since 2022, to reestablish the endangered birds, have paired up, built a nest in a redwood tree and appear to be tending to an egg.”

other things on my fewer wishlist: congresspeople doing "this is so messed up" vertical video from their styled kitchens about things they could have prevented for like the last 13 - 60 months.

maybe fewer celebrity gatekeepers like "this thing I just experienced was so cool too bad the gate just closed!"on here would be a good thing.
it is highly correlated with having your trade book -- and only your book -- in the background of your own zoom room.

Little snow in California and the West as a warm winter nears end California's snowpack remains much smaller than average after months of extremely warm conditions across the West.

Very little snow across the West during a winter that has brought record warmth

Sierra Nevada: 66% of avg
Upper Colorado River region: 66%

There's a parallel there! I once interviewed a biologist for a climate piece. She seemed almost optimistic. I asked her why, and she basically said that she stayed very motivated to do the work because we know what needs to be done, and every part of it that we actually do will make a difference.
