My stress level?

Amen. War is unbelievably terrible. In the US, we go to great lengths to make it less so. But not as successfully as we pretend.

Carter got it right - War is always evil, never a good. It’s not always the worst evil…but that judgement has a lot to do with who is burying their children.

I’m not sure. Too early to say, and (alas), killing civilians isn’t a war crime in general. A bunch of dead children in war happens, no error/misdeed/crime/mistake required. Which is why you don’t start the damn things unless you absolutely have to.

Or you are a narcissistic sociopath…

It wasn’t unknown - General Shinseki called it. CENTCOM’s planners knew it. Leadership didn’t _want_ to know. It’s all too easy to ignore undesired conclusions. Which, alas, the Bush administration was _really_ good at doing.

The classic debate amongst historians is β€œgreat person” vs. β€œtrends and forces” as an explanation of history.

It’s clearly a false dichotomy, because we also need to include the β€œgreat idiots” paradigm.

That’s the thing about β€œprecision strike” - it’s probabilities. 95% chance within X-meters of target. So if you drop 20 bombs…one is gonna be off target.

Plus, 2000 ln bombs aren’t exactly small.

Even if your target info is good…you are going to kill a bunch of people _near_ the target.

Amen.

It was apparently a pretty common idea in that (vague) part of the world. The Torah’s purity codes are expressed in similar terms. The codes linger (sadly), even when the framework is abandoned.

I wonder if this is symptomatic of a deeper problem - the amount of money sloshing around so exceeds GDP, that investing in goods and services doesn’t make sense. You can make more money chasing money flows than trying to make goods and services. Surely the macro guys have looked at this?

It's going to be quite amusing if Shor's Algorithm doesn't actually work.

Can Elon Musk really run AI in space? | The Economist Insider No one can accuse Elon Musk of lacking ambition. His latest idea? Launching data centres into space, where abundant solar energy and very low temperatures could solve the challenges of power and cooli...

I feel like I'm losing my mind. Cooling is an absolute pain in the keister in space. Cooling things in space is orders of magnitude harder than it is down here. Putting data centers in space is a horrifically bad idea just on that basis alone. Am I missing something?

Can I really justify another copy of this awesomeness? Temptation is a terrible thing…

The distortions caused by AI β€œinvestment” are a symptom of the core problem: There’s so much money around that it makes more sense to manipulate and chase money flows, rather than invest in production of goods and services.

If I was an economist, I’d try and prove it. M1 vs M3 or some such.

Revenge of the Sith, and the sequels, drove home for me that the problem with Star Wars is that it was never what we wanted it to be. We attributed so much grand vision, so many epic themes, so many grand ideas…and it never really had them. Could have, but didn’t.

Snorting coke off a toilet seat is general considered unhygienic; but raw milk smoothie vendor Tupac Amaru Schneidermann and his crystal therapist wife Xochitl Worthington-Schneidermann say they’re not so sure

The wolves aren't sending their best. It failed to respond to shouted orders. That's what it gets for being in a blue city. Its papers weren't in order.

In the defense of ICE, that was a vicious looking schnauzer, and it was brandishing a gun. Clearly a woke terrorist. It moved to draw a weapon. The dog's wife needs to be investigated for ties to the cartels. It looked foreign. From a s*%#hole country. It was attempting to run over an ICE agent.

I’m guessing Trump isn’t a bit opera fan. What with them singing in them foreign tongues and other such un-American tomfoolery.

But at least it is an actual benefit to people… which most of these systems don’t even bother trying to find.
