...It's disgusting. It doesn't make anyone stronger, it isn't justified, it isn't right. And it hurts everyone in the longrun
It's really unfortunate and awful that this happened, but two things can be true. He very likely apologized profusely afterwards, as he should- no matter the intent, it surely caused harm. But the idea that this should justify preventing people with Tourette's from speaking out, or speaking at all..
And I've seen people suggesting that they shouldn't have let him speak if he had the potential to do that, but that is blatantly telling a disabled person that their disability bars them from speaking in a public way. That their disability shouldn't be seen, shouldn't be in the public eye
The fact that these explanations alone don't illicit empathy in some people, that they can't comprehend that other people have experiences different from their own, is just sad. If you believe any part of what he did was intentional, you prove exactly why he needed to be on that stage
We don't choose what our tics are. Our tics are frequently harmful to ourselves. I have bruises on my leg and chest, my mouth is usually chapped and raw, and I get light-headedness and headaches, all thanks to tics. They can't be intentionally replaced or altered. Any tic you see is not a choice
People need to understand that we CANNOT control our tics. It's not a "sometimes can't control them," it's not a "can't control them on a bad day," it's not an "if we try hard enough we can control them." They're uncontrollable. We can suppress, but that requires sustained physical and mental effort
I'm late to the party, but I wanted to say my thoughts about the BAFTAs thing, as someone with Tourette's. I refuse to accept the idea that this is some sort of situation where the Tourette's community is now pitted against the black community. That idea is toxic and erases black people with TS
