Having similarly dealt with far-right characters I’ve reported on engage in stalking / harassing behaviour to the point where lawyers needed to be engaged, I can say Canada’s laws are completely insufficient to deal with these problems and I have zero trust in the legal system to protect journalists

The thing missing from most city paid parking plans is VALUE. No one wants to pay for parking! It’s true. No one wants to pay for anything!
If you pay for a meter or parking space that you had to circle the block forever to get, what was the value?
Go big or go home on this.

The tools for clearing active infrastructure already exist, but the barriers to efficiency is a lack of standard, wide, continuous design.

As an EV driver, this is a GREAT thread, I would much prefer to have options other than having to own a car. For example, I have no way to get to work without one. And a trip to the nearest hardware store would take me about two hours on public transit (I live in a city centre). That has to change.

Not only is February brutal in Edmonton... the leasing market feels like this snowstorm too. The absorption rate has completely shifted.
Many of us predicted that Spring 2026 leasing would be different, but I don't think anyone expected this many units to hit the market at the same time.
Right now, tenants have options - lots of them.
They walk into a showing, and if the unit isn't exactly what they want...there is similar one just across a street.
What we're seeing right now is something we haven't seen in a while - a real competition between landlords.
free months of rent
gift cards
parking incentives
flexible move-in dates
upgraded appliances
utility credits
Everyone is trying to lease asap as the lender is coming at you and if you don't achieve proforma - you get to buy the rate down ouch!
For investors this means a few things: You need to be strategic, flexible, and realistic (!!!) with pricing and incentives.
Turns out building more homes makes housing more affordable.
Edmonton real estate investors are realizing that because so many options are on the market for tenants, they need to be sweetening the pot with incentives - and being "realistic" with rent.

Uh...not an e-bike
Definitely not an e-bike
And this isn't an e-bike
But this is not an e-bike
Can anyone tell me what the bike industry and/or People For Bikes are doing about the way e-bikes are being blamed for havoc caused by people riding electric motorcycles?!!?
WAY MORE THAN HALF THE STORIES ABOUT DEATHS CAUSED BY E-BIKES DO NOT INVOLVE E-BIKES. THIS IS KIND OF IMPORTANT.

A winter crosswalk in a suburban neighbourhood in the Edmonton, AB.
As if the comical width of this neighbourhood crosswalk isn’t enough of a middle finger to pedestrians, apparently the City finds it acceptable to leave snow unplowed like this for half a month while the driving lanes remain bare. #yeg #yegbike #yegwalk

Danielle Smith from 2022 would agree with @jeromyyyc.bsky.social that Calgary isn't getting a fair deal.
"If we're going to rail against equalization at the federal level, then we can't keep doing the same thing to our municipalities..."
She was saying many things back then to get elected.

Oh and don't come for me about visibility. I'm wearing bright colours, lights and signaling to let drivers know what is happening.
I just want safe passing distances enforced and maybe a little bit of fucking patience so we can all get to where we are going.

It's mornings like this that make people NOT want to choose their bike. Blowing snow is one thing to handle. Road conditions another, but agro drivers? That turns people off of taking their bike.
This isn't isolated to winter, I get this in the summer too. We need some gd enforcement out there.

Does blowing snow turn driver's brains off? I had two close passes (barely able to scoot over) on residential roads. One Agro one who rushed me getting off a road onto a SUP. And a third who was ANGRY motioning at me when I dismounted to cross 127 st at future crosswalk (corner to corner).

I have seen a lot of cursed stuff in my time in academia but this is among the *most* cursed.
Grammarly is generating miniature LLMs based on academic work so that users can have their writing ‘reviewed’ by experts like David Abulafia, who died less than two months ago.

Unfortunately, politicians see bikes as either a child's toy, a rich person's hobby, or a poor man's last resort.
BIG CAR has a role here too, from roads construction companies, to dealerships, all the way to auto companies, none of them want less people driving.
GDP hates more people biking.

The math doesn't lie.
Danielle Smith spent $17 million on "Alberta is Calling" to recruit new residents. But spent $0 on the infrastructure to support them.
Now that the bills are due and the services are failing, she’s pointing the finger at the very people she invited.

Douglas Todd: Jarring 18-storey tower on leafy Vancouver street a sign of the out-of-scale times
About 10 steel-and-glass highrises, much like the one proposed for Yukon and 14th, are set to arise among character homes within the Broadway plan zone.

Douglas Todd: Hundreds of quiet east Vancouver side streets upzoned for six-storey apartment blocks

'Monstrosities' or the evolution of housing? Multi-unit buildings on single-family lots gain traction in B.C. cities

It's just this building, not all new housing?
You are not against all new housing, right?
A storey in four acts as captured by local news media:
18 storeys is too high, we’d be fine with 4-6 storeys
6 storeys are too big, we'd be fine with multiplexes
Multiplexes are monstrosities, we are fine with existing post-Second World War bungalows
