Marx was a communist but ardently not a Marxist. So are lots and lots of anarchists.

#OtD 29 Oct 1901 anarchist Leon Czolgosz was executed for the murder of US President Mckinley
Haidt just announced that he’s joined Bari Weiss’s “the free press” fascist disinformation org, and the Heritage Foundation has a plan to use social media restrictions to ban lgbtq content. That should tell you all you need to know about the politics of censoring the speech of youth.
There’s a deeper ideological pathology here: an unshakable belief that power listens to reason. It doesn’t.
"We’re being told that disruptive demonstrations are just 'playing into Trump’s hands' by giving him a pretext for military dictatorship. The regime doesn’t need a pretext"
- this zine circulating btw autonomous groups around No Kings & anti-ICE protests thenowtimes.substack.com/p/its-fascis...
Bro, it’s a declining empire, and Trump’s actions are causing it to decline much faster. So even if Dems ever do regain power, and wanted to hold him to account, they’ll have less and less capacity to do so.
It’s not about “regaining power” it’s about surviving climate chaos.
Pretty sure the CDC guidance changed this week to, “let the olds and poors die in the gutter.”
Yup yup. Tried to make a release party / retrospective thing for it too but something came up last minute.
I spent a weekend in jail in rural Indiana once. I recommend against it.
All Huggy Bear all the time.
You forgot
14. Have a massive trust fund of blood emeralds
15. Go to elite boarding schools that regular people could never afford
16. Illegally immigrate to the US to steal peoples wealth and then blame all the problems on refugees and migrants.
GPT could have written better hype for him. And DeepSeek could have told him it was untrue. And still neither would be worth the investment.
This seems correct— which would suggest that scientists and universities in poorer / red / “taker” states are most at risk and need to get their reps to stop this.
Francis Farmer waaaayy up that list
A lot is really discouraging about the rise of fascism in the US. I feel particularly distressed at how difficult and unlikely a popular front between liberals and the left is, largely as a result of the horrible turn of liberalism this last year. 1/19 🧵
For most of human history the species was way more cat-like than cow-like (weavers, gatherers, storytellers). It is only under capitalism and colonialism that the smart-cow fable makes sense.
The Nazis are all a-Twitter.
Wow. Pleasantly surprised to see Luigi’s terrorism charges being questioned on MSNBC.
NYU Campus Security and Administration is totally out of control.
On Wednesday - I filmed a peaceful protest in Bobst library for two hours.
Yesterday at 2pm while at home,
I received an email explaining that I’ve been designated “persona non grata” and banned from several buildings on campus.
Strangely enough I’m planning a series of articles about how I am wrong and everybody else is right.
Maybe it’s as simple as “dialectical complexity can’t meme”?
I’m unclear if there’s some small revenue for them in it, and I’m not necessarily suggesting that they’re taking $ from the kremlin directly… but they do all tend to flatten conflicts into good guys/ bad guys and give Iran, China, Russia a pass.
I can’t pretend to have any special insight into their motives or actual beliefs. I follow some of them (anarcho.communism, abnormalize.being, antifascistmemes) because they seem to reach a mass audience and for lulz. It seems like there’s a whole little ecosystem of these accounts.
One could forgive the uninitiated for mistaking that sort of deliberate cooptation of anarchist positions / branding as being evidence of broader uncritical support amongst anarchist for such regimes.
I’m sure you’re right that ‘tankie’ has been reduced to simply a slur for those one disagrees with. Separately there are also a bunch of popular sock puppet meme accounts on IG which profess to be “anarcho communist” etc but post quite simplistic support for Iranian / Putin backed regimes.
I like Táíwò’s writing a lot, and here and elsewhere he’s not wrong. But what this call for big-tent united front action tends to obscure is that it mostly hasn’t been ideological differences that split the left in recent years— it’s mostly a million instances of sexual harassment and assault.
Who cares if the guy read dumb books and was a tech bro? Isn’t it actually *better* if he isn’t of the left? Harder for the fascists to discredit? Are we seriously imposing an ideological purity test on loan wolf assassins now? He’s not a hero; he’s a symptom of a sick system.
To the extent that ai represents the wholesale liquidation of intellectual property / its subsumption by a few big corporations, we should expect most culture workers (professors, software engineers, writers, musicians) to face mass layoffs and wage declines. How do we stop that en masse?
I’m not seeing much class analysis in this discourse — not “how can I position myself within the neoliberal academy” but “what are the material effects of ai on an increasingly precarious class of educators and researchers”?
