Thought I would check the Kilauea webcam. What a view to wake up to! Thinking of all the USGS Volcanoes team and hoping federal agencies can get back to their jobs soon.

Pile of shallot bulbs with green tops attached, lying on soil in garden bed
Shallot bulbs with green tops attached arranged on trays for drying
Shallot harvest today! Planted individual bulbs in October in my 7a Northern New Jersey garden. Covered with thick layer of leaves in December, weeded around the growing stalk in spring, cut off scapes in June and dug them up today. Now I can eat some fresh and dry the rest for storage.
Right now most attention is on the damage. But I don't think it's too early to start thinking about what could rise from the ashes. One dayβmaybe a long way offβpeople will realize they want a functioning government and better ways of having a say in it.

"Under patrimonialism, a leader exerts power without respect to formal rules and regulations, personal allegiances ... determine who has access to ... resources and the entire system is managed with one overarching goal - to benefit the ruler. Bureaucracy was originally introduced as the antidote."
A trio of snowdrops. Not a bulb thatβs had much success in my yard, so Iβm delighted this one has multiplied.
