The best selection of film-related books on the internet! I can't recommend it highly enough.

When someone says βScientists do not want you to knowβ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They canβt shut up about what they found out and want you to know.
Oh the commission fees for sketches of middle-age dads were astronomical
I had a fantastic time at Vancouver Fan Expo this past weekend and was able to make a couple excellent additions to the ongoing "My kids as superheroes" sketchbook from the wonderful Steve Skroce and @theartofemilia.bsky.social . Thanks to both!
Just a great-looking movie too. Beautiful from beginning to end. (And not just the scenes with Annette Bening.)
That "God Bless America" followed by a shout out to almost wvery country from both continents choked me up a little.
This is possibly the most effective rebuttal in Bluesky history...
Heading to Cinemark in a few minutes and I'm weirdly excited to check this. I've actually been logging which theaters have the longest ad/trailer segments and Cinemark is bad.
(I do love the promo where the guy misses out on part of the movie while getting snacks. The crowd reactions are glorious)
Oh man, thanks for sharing this. Exactly what I needed to watch after hearing the news. I hope the rest of the day on my feed is just people sharing clips.
Ha! Thanks for this comment. I saw the Sphere movie too and the mental about face from "Wow, this planet is beautiful. We need to preserve it" to "I am watching this movie in the middle of possibly the least environmentally conscious location on Earth" can cause whiplash.
Five panels from V FOR VENDETTA (written by Alan Moore, art by David Lloyd)
BTW when I say abolish ICE, I mean abolish it entirely and replace it with exactly nothing. Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. That's it.
this year's nominees for best picture are...
bugonia
Our local Film Critics Association always has a great annual awards lineup and this year is no different.
I particularly love the award for best performance in a sci-fi or genre film which is named after a couple of beloved local gone-too-soon critics: Jeff Vice and Jimmy Martin.
A teenage boy with dark hair and a black and gold football jersey holds his helmet, standing on the side line of a green football field
Iβm one of the ProPublica reporters who has been documenting the aggressive tactics federal agents are using against immigrants & U.S. citizens
All eyes are on Minnesota right now, but I want to tell you about Arnoldo Bazan, a 16-YO citizen in Houston who was choked by immigration agents in October
Ah, an all-time favorite. And the music in it is some of the best ever, Western or otherwise. Did Kasdan just tell Bruce Broughton "Hey, make something as good as Magnificent 7" and then he just went and did it??
Do you think he sets it as a recurring appointment on his calendar or something? "Let's see, what've I got today? Oh, that time of year again!"
The most dispiriting thing about America is learning how many people will go to ANY lengths to justify police violence, brutal immigration policies, racism, etc.
These people don't just think this is okay. They feel duty bound to publicly let everyone know. It is soulless and inhumane.
And the good news on how recent those Clover Press editions are is that, while a bit spendy, they are all still in print! (And beautiful.)
Don't know if you remember this, but YEARS ago there was a Wizard article that covered a panel with you, Waid, Gaiman and Miller. Your answer to a "biggest influence" question was Caniff and TERRY. It was the 1st I had ever heard of it but got me started and I loved it. Belated thanks for the rec!
This would be the best DVD bonus feature of all time.
Need a not-watched-to-death Christmas movie tonight? Want one with fantastic profanity and killer dialogue? THE REF (1994) is sitting out there waiting for you!
Don't believe me? Read this great look back @jasondashbailey.com did on the movie a few years ago: www.flavorwire.com/594535/secon...
I'm on board with this. If trailers and articles are designed to sell me on a movie I am already wiling to prepurchase tickets for TODAY, I don't need 'em!
I think about J.J. openly talking about how sleazy Sidney is right in front of him and then asking Sidney for a light. "Match me Sidney" because he knows Sidney will suffer any abuse to stay in J.J.'s good graces.
Seems timely.
I recall a friend at pub trivia earnestly trying to persuade me to watch a YouTube video that would somehow convince me the incredible throne room lightsaber battle sucked actually. I thought he had lost his mind.
My 2025 resolution was to journal every day and my personal prompt was to start off by listing what I watched/read/listened to that day and then just go off. Gradually I started expanding into writing about all kinds of stuff.
(I envy your artistic ability. A drawing journal would be amazing.)
Great review! And yes, I actually think one of the things that makes these work so well is that Blanc is always assisting the actual protagonist in finding justice. And in each movie he is touched by the goodness and humanity of the person he helps and it affects how he wraps up the mystery.
A great essay on one of the best movies of the last 25 years.
Oh man, what a great piece! This line: "That darkness is why Spielberg has always been a perfect candidate to make a film noir." It seems at once so counterintuitive but also obvious. Very much enjoyed this.
Saturday marks the 40th anniversary of the theatrical release of CLUE! If you want to know everything about the making of the movie and its four different endings (you heard me!), then you can get a signed copy of my book at the best movie & TV bookstore on the planet, @mzspress.bsky.social
