I don't know if home batteries are worthwhile unless your grid power is extremely unreliable or your off peak rate is very high. A grid tied system is just simpler to set up and you'll probably never make the cost difference up with load shifting.

Some houses have a "whole house fan" does a similar thing. Basically a huge loud fan that blows into the attic, designed to be run with a window open on the opposite end of the house. It's hugely effective in the late spring / early summer when the house will stay hot long after the sun has set.
