A flier for an event. It is holiday themed with Christmas lights and a mouse in a santa hat. The text reads "The SF Bay chapter of TWS invites you to our Holiday Mixer: Learn about our board. Join us for a casual mixter to meet current board members and learn about open positions. Network and celebrate white learning how to get involved. Not ready to commit? Come hand out anyway! Beeryland, 2318 Telegraph Ave, Oakland. Friday, January 9 at 5:30 PM.
The Bay Area chptr of TWS is hosting a mixer that will double as a info/recruitment session for the board. If you have ever wanted to get involved in professional service by serving on the board of a non-profit this is a really easy way to get your foot in the door. It's fun & great for prof dev. π
If youβre looking for more people to talk with we should chat.
Got some footage of the @kingtides.bsky.social overtopping the outer berm at Santa Venetia Marsh. There is a known population of @thesaltymouse.bsky.social here. Winter #KingTides are likely the deadliest time of the year for SMHM. Luckily the weather was pretty mild during these tides.

A screen shot of a magazine page. The title is βSurviving on the Edge. City mouse, country mouseβ¦ and salt mouse?β In the bottom left is a photo of a mouse on a black gloved hand.
The most interesting thing about writing an article for The Wildlife Societyβs Wildlife Professional magazine is learning who actually reads those things right away because those folks keep texting to congratulate me. π€£

If you haven't seen this yet I recommend a watch and a share!
A love story.
Unfortunately we didnβt get a good video but you can see the shape of the raccoon standing there waiting for the fox.
A raccoon stands in a residential yard beside a road illuminated by brake lights.
Last night we saw a #GrayFox and #Raccoon walking across the road, seemingly #foraging together. We passed in the car and the fox came back to look at something in the road and the raccoon waited for him. Has anyone document these species foraging together in California yet? Videoπ
There will be similar events in SoCal and Merced, but on different days. If you want more info about those let me know and I can try to connect you to the right people! @theawang.bsky.social
You can use this link to RSVP for the Bay Area event.

Hahaha, this post had so much reach it showed up in my BookSky alt account.
A screen shot of an email with text reading: Fellow Mammalogists. As many of you are aware, science is in a state of turmoil in the United States. Recent efforts to drastically reduce government workforces and research funding for science will lead to many adverse consequences for Earthβs remaining natural ecosystems. The American Society of Mammalogists (ASM) is the worldβs largest and oldest professional organization devoted to the study of mammals. As a global leader in the science of mammalogy, it behooves us to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to our core mission: to promote science as the basis for managing and conserving mammals, to diversify the field of mammalogy, and to advance the scientific understanding of mammals globally. This means we stand committed to supporting all members of our scientific community regardless of ancestry, color, national origin, marital status, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, age, disability, or political affiliation. Science is enhanced when diversity is enriched. ASM will continue to offer scholarships and grants to promote mammal conservation, recognize diverse mammalogists for their important contributions to the field through scholarships and awards, maintain the operations of the IDEA Committee, and pursue other efforts central to our core mission. Moreover, the American Society of Mammalogists urges continued public support of β and trust in β scientific inquiry and the use of science-based data as the foundation for decisions and policies affecting life on Earth. Felisa A. Smith, Ph.D. President, American Society of Mammalogists John L. Koprowski, Ph.D. President Elect, American Society of Mammalogists
This is how you support your members in terrifying times. Nicely done @mammalogists.bsky.social. Thank you for being a strong voice for science and scientists.
What a privilege to play an in-person game of #FindThatLizard with @afroherper.bsky.social during her capstone plenary at the Western Section of @thewildlifesociety.bsky.social 2025 Annual Meeting!
Her insights into the wildlife field are so powerful. Thank you for joining us this week Dr. McGee!
Preach.
Love the commentary. π
It was probably for aesthetics and also the fact that I still don't really fully understand what y'all do tbh. π
This talk was from 2019 so I was good on the biology, but still learning about the regulatory stuff.
A screen shot of a powerpoint slide. The top reads "Habitat Types." Across it are 5 columns evenly spaced with photos of different habitat types ranging from Diked ponds, to tidal marshes, to tidal mudflats, to sandy beaches, to open water. Below the photos are illustrations of a mouse, birds, and fish showing the range of their habitat use. The habitat types are also color coded.
A screen shot of a powerpoint slide. The top reads "Management og the San Francisco Estuary." In the center is a circle divided in half. A blue hald has illlustrations of fish, a green half has illustrations of two birds and a mouse. The circle is ringed by four dotted lines in different colors, each is associated with a logo from a regulatory agency in the San Francisco Bay, USACE, BCDC, CDFW and USFWS. At the bottom of the slide a title reads "Untanbling restoration for bay area mammals, Katie Smith, WRA, Inc."
Sometimes when I am going through old #research talks about @thesaltymouse.bsky.social to poach slides I am surprised at how nice some of my old presentations are, back when I had a lot of time to work on them. Maybe this is the year I start presentations early enough to make them badass again. π€
Hey #Mammalogists, I would like to submit a proposal for the 2025 Wildlife Society conference in Edmondton. I've been wanting to do a Symposium on conservation of peri-aquatic special-status mammals. Salt marsh harvest mouse, Amargosa vole, Perdido Key beach mouse, etc. Anyone interested? #TWS
I added one more on as a gift last second. π

Tail seems a little long for a vole, though I only have experience with west coast voles. Seems right for the deer mice we have out here though. But I am only an expert in California rodents. Likely Peromyscus or Microtus.
Hey #hydrology folks! Seeking recommendations for in situ saline water flow/velocity monitoring equipment. Right now looks like Badger Meter is most common for research. I would appreciate any insights folks have about brands to favor or avoid.
Including a SMHM doing hydro stuff for visibility.

That makes sense. Pretty friggen wild how at risk all of these communities must be.
Hahaha what could possible go wrong. Geez.
